The desk and bookcase are married (constructed at different times or not intended to be used together).    Desk: The top of the desk is structurally integral to the piece, and composed of one board with edges flush to the sides of the case. The top of the desk is attached to the sides with through dovetails. Quarter-round moldings are nailed to the side and front edges of the desk top. The left side of the desk is composed of three vertical boards. The right side of the desk was originally composed of three boards, but the board closest to the back of the desk is missing. The back of the desk is composed of two horizontally-oriented, butt-jointed boards on which saw marks are visible. The boards are attached to the back of the desk with nails and glue blocks. The desk bottom is structurally integral to the piece and composed of a single board attached to the sides with dovetails. The front and sides of the desk bottom are framed by ogee bracket molding nailed in place. A center drop ornaments the skirt of the desk bottom, with evidence of saw marks on the underside and sides of the center drop. Four ogee bracket feet support the desk and are attached to the desk bottom with glue blocks.    The slant-front door on the exterior of the desk is made of two parallel, horizontally-oriented boards, the short edges of which are tenoned into narrow perpendicular boards. The edges of the door are finished with integral cock-beaded molding. Nail holes on the inside of the door and desk board indicate that felt or leather once covered the writing surface. Two lopers with brass knobs support the desk front door when open. Below the slant-front door are four graduated drawers, each surrounded by cock-beaded molding. Dovetail construction joins the drawer sides to the back as well as the drawer sides to the front. The drawer sides are full height and have applied running strips. There are visible plane marks on the back of the bottom drawer. The bottom of the bottom drawer is composed of two boards with the grain running front to back. The drawer bottoms are let into grooves in the drawer sides and nailed to the undersides of the backs. The underside of the top drawer is inscribed with four hash marks and additional unconventional markings. The two bottom drawers have similar unconventional markings on their undersides. Each of the drawers and the slant-front door have decorative brass keyhole surrounds that match the bail-handle pulls one each of the drawers.    The interior of the desk contains a central, removable prospect unit flanked on either side by four pigeonholes atop two drawers. The pigeonholes each have an arched valance. The four drawers, made of walnut with small brass knobs, are dovetailed at the front and back. The drawer sides are full height. There is some variation in the construction of the bottom drawers, but each is composed of one board with the grain running front to back. The drawer bottoms are glued and repaired with modern nails. The central prospect unit is composed of a drawer and pigeonhole flanked by two Doric columns. The drawer front is cut in a flattened curve and has a small brass knob. The pigeonhole?ÇÖs valence conceals a hidden drawer accessible from the front of the prospect unit. The unit also contains two narrow, vertical drawers set into the columns and accessible only from the back of the prospect unit.    Bookcase: The top and bottom of the bookcase are set into grooves in the sides. The back of the bookcase is composed of two horizontal boards secured with nails; saw marks are visible on the back sides of these boards. Mathematical notations are written in chalk on the back of the bookcase. The bottom front edge of the bookcase contains two sliding candleholders with small brass knobs. The top of the bookcase is ornamented with a broken arched pediment with three turned mushroom and inverted urn finials. The front bottom edge of the pediment has two arches cut into it to accommodate the shape of the bookcase?ÇÖs doors. Cove and quarter-round moldings are nailed along the sides of the case top and continue up the arches of the pediment.    The bookcase interior has a symmetrical arrangement of drawers, pigeonholes, and shelves. A row of three drawers is set at the bottom of the bookcase; the middle drawer is slightly wider than the two drawers on either side of it. The drawers are made of cherry and dovetailed at the front and back. The sides of the drawers are full height. There are plane marks on the drawer backs. The drawer bottoms are made of one board with the grain running front to back. The drawer bottoms are glued into place. Brass knobs on the bookcase drawers do not match the brass knobs on the desk drawers. Five pigeonholes are stacked vertically above the drawers along each side of the bookcase; each is surmounted with an arched valance. The remainder of the bookcase interior is divided into compartments or shelves. A full-width, fixed shelf divides the top and bottom halves of the space. The lower half is further divided into thirds with two vertical dividers. Each of the side spaces is further divided by a narrow shelf. The upper half of the bookcase interior contains an adjustable, full-width shelf. The bookcase is fitted with two doors with through tenon construction. The doors are arched at the top with integral quarter round molding and raised panels. The doors are secured to the case sides with knife hinges.
