(47 cm)"},{"label":"Description","value":"Nineteenth century desk chair on castors with painted canvas upholstered seat back. The seat back has an ergonomic concave curve. The back is upholstered on both sides, tufted on the front and stuffed with horse hair. (Seams, particularly along upper edge, have given way to expose stuffing.) Upholstery is tacked in to place with plain nails. There is negative space between the seat back and seat. The rear back supports are wider at bottom, tenoned to the seat and flare outward to accommodate a removable seat cushion. The wood surfaces appear to be painted with dark brown paint and possibly are also varnished. The seat is made from at least three boards and is slightly trapezoidal in shape with rounded edges. Where arm supports attach, the seat undulates outwards. The arms are mortise and tenoned to the seat and reinforced with glue. The arms are slightly concave and curve outward. They are narrowest at back and have rounded edges. A piece of wood along length of arm creates a smooth, domed curve. The arm supports are columnar and turned. From the top, there are three ring turnings of increasing size, followed by three round bulbs, then a bead and double ring. A mortise and tenon attaches the arm support to the seat. There is a shallow horizontal curve at the seat front.  The current seat cushion is most likely an early replacement, possibly early twentieth century. It is tufted on both sides and has piping along top and bottom edges. The underside of the cushion is cotton. The remainder is painted canvas, similar to the seat back upholstery, but slightly different in color and showing fewer signs of age and wear.  The chair has four legs. The legs are thick and proportional with the chair upper. The two front legs form concave curves. The bottom edges are chamfered. The rear legs form s-shaped curves. The legs are attached to a threaded metal shaft, on which the seat turns to adjust seat height. There are six screws attaching seat to mounting bracket and shaft. There is a cross-shaped bracket at top where legs meet. Each leg is screwed into the bracket with two screws. There is a spider on the underside of the legs. Here, each leg is screwed into the spider with three screws. Each leg ends in a castor, which are attached with four screws and a castor plate.  The underside of the seat bears two separate but very similar makers?ÇÖ marks, both incised with a metal stamp. They read, ?Ç£J.C. Hubbard / Boston?Ç¥ and ?Ç£WM.
