(53.6 cm)"},{"label":"Description","value":"Splat-back, William and Mary armchair. The chair back has a curved profile, with a straight crest rail and squared shoulders. The crest rail is carved with scrolling leaves and a central phoenix. The upholstered back splat is framed with carved flowers, set within the same foliate motif. The splat joins to a low-set, carved slat. The rear stiles are turned and continuous with the legs. They are both cracked along carved blocks, where the stiles are joined to the crest rail. The left stile is cracked just above the arm. It was repaired with a modern bracket, now missing a screw. The stiles are surmounted with turned ball finials. The right finial is cracked and fragile.  The trapezoidal seat is framed with mortise and tenon joints, reinforced with modern L-brackets and flat-head screws. The leather seat slips out of the frame. Regularly spaced holes in an inset rabbet groove suggest that the slip seat is not original to the design of the frame. The leather show cover is upholstered over previous layers of unidentified textiles, visible along the back surface of the splat and the undersides of the arms. Evenly spaced brass nails secure leather trim on both sides of the back splat, but the surviving trim is brittle. There are additional decorative brass nails trimming the upholstered arm rests. Iron tacks are visible on the undersides of the arms, and where the trim has fallen off the back splat.  The arms are carved, terminating in c-scrolls decorated with carved acanthus leaves. The four baluster legs are joined to the seat rail with mortise and tenon joints. They are supported with a turned H-stretcher, reinforced with modern L-brackets. There are two additional stretchers: a turned stretcher joining the rear legs, and a carved stretcher, in the style of the crest, between the front legs. The rear stretcher has a straight, back surface cut into the turned wood. The feet terminate in castors. The front right roller is cut from wood; the remainder are brass.  The chair is painted black, possibly over a layer of existing varnish. The paint is flaking and wearing thin to reveal the wood underneath. There are irregular hand saw marks visible on the inside of the seat frame and on the back of the front stretcher. Many of the mortise and tenon joints are loose and visible to the observer; they are reinforced with glue."},{"label":"Date Digitized","value":"1/17/2019"},{"label":"Marks, Signatures, and
