A carved, pierced crest rail of scrolled leaves and plumes is set between baluster-turned stiles surmounted with elongated acorn finials. A lower rail is cut into cyma curves on either side of the lower edge. Two columnar spindles are flanked with wide, flat spindles. The front surfaces of the back are covered in leather; originally the back was not upholstered. The trapezoidal seat is upholstered with leather over the rails. The front legs are turned, embellished with volutes, and terminate in scroll feet. The rear legs are stump. Bracing the legs are turned stretchers: there is one rear stretcher and two side and one medial stretcher that form an H-shape. An arched, pierced, and carved stretcher is set between the front legs.  The chair is grain-painted to resemble walnut over original black paint. The crest rail is a replacement. The balls under the front feet are missing."},{"label":"Date Digitized","value":"2/27/2019"},{"label":"Materials","value":"Maple; Upholstery materials; Leather; Paint"},{"label":"Style","value":["William and Mary"]},{"label":"Basis of Date","value":"Dated by Winterthur staff (1959)."},{"label":"Date (EDTF)","value":"D:00 M:00 Y:1690 - D:00 M:00 Y:1710"},{"label":"Basis of Origin","value":"Place of origin determined by Brock Jobe (2015)."},{"label":"Place of Origin","value":"Vicinity of Boston, Massachusetts"},{"label":"Other Name","value":"Occasional chair"},{"label":"Object Type","value":["Chair"]},{"label":"Object Use","value":"Seating furniture"},{"label":"Category","value":"Furniture"},{"label":"Title","value":"Side chair"},{"label":"Date Modified","value":"2/27/2019"}],"description":"Side chair","sequences":[{"@type":"sc:Sequence","canvases":[{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/winterthur/iiif/874cc007-b87b-4e3a-990e-a53e72720687/canvas/_1","@type":"sc:Canvas","label":"dapc_1988-0535-001_overall_color","height":1500,"width":640,"images":[{"@type":"oa:Annotation","motivation":"sc:painting","resource":{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/winterthur/iiif/6a445db3-67d2-4631-a46f-648033c09a29/full/full/0/default.jpg","@type":"dctypes:Image","format":"image/jpeg","service":{"@context":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/context.json","@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/winterthur/iiif/6a445db3-67d2-4631-a46f-648033c09a29","profile":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/level2.json","tiles":[{"width":512,"scaleFactors":[1,2,4]}]},"height":1500,"width":640},"on":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/winterthur/iiif/874cc007-b87b-4e3a-990e-a53e72720687/canvas/_1","metadata":[]}],"thumbnail":{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/winterthur/iiif/6a445db3-67d2-4631-a46f-648033c09a29/full/500,500/0/default.jpg","@type":"dctypes:Image","height":500,"width":500}},{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/winterthur/iiif/874cc007-b87b-4e3a-990e-a53e72720687/canvas/_2","@type":"sc:Canvas","label":"dapc_1988-0535-002_overall_bw","height":1500,"width":641,"images":[{"@type":"oa:Annotation","motivation":"sc:painting","resource":{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/winterthur/iiif/5c249224-7547-4dba-b8f3-d3e7ff8f78c1/full/full/0/default.jpg","@type":"dctypes:Image","format":"image/jpeg","service":{"@context":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/context.json","@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/winterthur/iiif/5c249224-7547-4dba-b8f3-d3e7ff8f78c1","profile":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/level2.json","tiles":[{"width":512,"scaleFactors":[1,2,4]}]},"height":1500,"width":641},"on":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/winterthur/iiif/874cc007-b87b-4e3a-990e-a53e72720687/canvas/_2","metadata":[]}],"thumbnail":{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/winterthur/iiif/5c249224-7547-4dba-b8f3-d3e7ff8f78c1/full/500,500/0/default.jpg","@type":"dctypes:Image","height":500,"width":500}}]}],"thumbnail":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/winterthur/iiif/6a445db3-67d2-4631-a46f-648033c09a29/full/300,300/0/default.jpg","logo":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/winterthur/iiif/logo"}
