(33.3 cm)"},{"label":"Description","value":"This Empire-style desk and bookcase is arranged with glass paneled doors over three small side by side drawers over a slant top desk and then three additional full width drawers, the first of which is slightly smaller than the lower three.  Bookcase: The bookcase top is constructed from one board attached to the sides by half-blind dovetails with applied moldings on the front and sides which features a straight flat into an extended bevel profile above a double bead applied strip. The top front and side rails are decorated with a line of beading then a strip of mahogany veneer and then another line of beading. The case sides are constructed from one board each with squared front edges. The case sides are notched so that the bookcase doors sit flush with the case making part of the case side visible from the front. The case back is a paneled construction with five boards which are joined by groves giving the back a seamless flat appearance from the front. The case bottom is constructed from one board and attached by dovetails. The interior of the bookcase and the case back are covered in a reddish wash, probably to match the mahogany.  The bookcase doors are mortise and tenon panel-framed construction likely with the original glass. The glass is arched at the top and the four panels are supported by half round moldings forming a cross. Veneered curved corner blocks were added to the top edges to enhance the shape of the arch. The glass support elements were let into grooves in the door frame. The sides and top rails of the doors are veneered and the lower rail of the door fronts features an angled book matched mahogany veneer. The bookcase doors are attached via two sets of half-surface hinges. The right door has a brass lock and the left door has top and bottom latches to secure it independently. There are door stops at the top and bottom of the case near the latches. The bookcase features two movable shelves with fourteen groove slot options. The two shelves have the same reddish wash but also feature mahogany facings with a top and bottom beaded edge.  The three side by side drawers are all the same size and feature mahogany veneer onto a mahogany drawer front. The drawer sides and back are also mahogany; the bottom is pine. The drawer bottoms rest on the case bottom, which shows evidence of wear, and there are drawer stops on the drawer dividers. The drawer bottoms are made from one board with side to side grain and are chamfered at the front and sides. The drawer bottoms were left rough with visible tear outs and saw mill marks, except the left drawer which was half planed. The drawers were constructed with dovetails at the back and half-blind dovetails at the front. The bottom was let into grooves at the front and sides and then nailed to the underside of the back. There are vertical dividers between the three drawers but their attachment is unknown. Circular wear suggests that the current brass pulls are replacements.  Desk: The lower case top, meaning the top of the desk, is composed of two boards attached via some type of dovetail, applied facing covers joinery. Molding is applied to the front and sides in a complex structure that is hard to see. There is a horizontal board set into the case sides with the moldings attached and the back board fitted into the area. The molding is formed from three parts, a bead that sits on a slightly rounded bevel section and then and additional flat section which makes the molding flush to the case side. The case sides are each made of one board with a secondary wood facing for the length of the side. The front edge features an applied front that extends, overhangs, towards the drawers. A top to bottom tapered column stands proud of the case frame and is likely one solid piece of turned wood from the loper to foot. The cases back is constructed of two horizontal boards joined with a butt joint and nailed to the case sides. There is a white paint splatter on the interior or front side of the back boards. The case bottom is constructed of two boards but the attachment is not visible. A facing is attached to the bottom edge of the case with an applied half-round molding. Below this is a veneered straight skirt which is nailed on and has glue blocks. The front legs are the afore mentioned columns. The back legs are let into the bottom of the case and have braces and glue blocks. The back legs feature a turned profile of four rings into an urn and then a bed and terminate in a trumpet foot.  The slant front desk lid extends across the total length of the desk front and features a miter joint panel-frame at the top and bottom. The lid is veneered at the front and back as well as featuring a facing on the top and bottom edge. The desk sides may also have veneer. At the upper right of the desk is an inset double inkwell and pen holder that may swing up exposing a cubby below. The well is constructed with nails and a rabbit joint and is likely set into the desk with glue and a tight fit. The top edges of the divider and pen holder are beaded. The desk felt is replaced. The lid rests on two pull out lopers with plain brass pulls. The lopers extend beyond the cases front and sit over the column between the lower case top and the list case divider with an added vertical divider between the loper and the first drawer. An additional piece of primary wood is attached to the side of the loper to give the appearance that it is flush to the case. The lopers have a thick mahogany facing on the end and the rest of the pine loper is painted in the reddish wash. The lopers are set on a diagonal with the back upper corner cut down to fit in the case when pushed in. A large round dowel functions as a forward stop and mahogany glue blocks (only on left) attached to the case side function as a back stop. The lopers run on a wedge shaped runner.  The first of the full length drawers is slightly less deep than the others and features an added interior divider to create compartments a row of two compartments and a row of three compartments; the dividers may be a later addition. The drawers rest on runners in the case which are set into groves in the case sides via a dovetail and are attached to the drawer divides. Glue blocks are applied under the runners but their originality is unknown. Additional supports are applied on top of the runners to keep the drawers from shifting side to side. The drawer fronts feature horizontal veneer and facing applied to the top front edge. The drawer sides and back are full height and flat. The drawer bottoms are constructed from two boards oriented side to side with chamfering at the front and sides. The drawer bottoms themselves were left rough and have replaced runners. The sides are joined to the back with dovetails and to the front with half-blind dovetails. The drawer bottom is let into a groove at the front and sides and then nailed to the underside of the back. There are two drawer dividers with front facing, but it is unclear how they are attached to the case. The dust boards are not full depth. There is a white paint splatter on the inside of the drawers. Screwed and nailed to the center of the underside of the case top is an angled wedge of wood that functions to prevent the top drawer from tipping and falling out. The brass drawer pulls are likely the original cast stems with stamped up embossed floral surround. Each drawer has a lock. The middle drawer has an [M] (see DAPC_2017-5008-013_mark_upper_case_middle_drawer). The right drawer has an [R] (see DAPC_2017-5008-014_mark_upper_case_right_drawer). The right drawer also has a chalk [II] (see DAPC_2017-5008-015_mark_upper_case_interior_right_drawer_II) on the inside bottom and a scratched [IV] at the back under the graphite letter.  The first drawer on the lower case has the name [Barstow] written in chalk under the drawer dividers (see DAPC_2017-5008-019_lower_case_top_drawer). This is the name of a possible owner and prominent family in Hanover. The divider itself has a [II] chalk mark on the back of the middle side to side divider near the left compartment (see DAPC_2017-5008-020_mark_lower_case_divider_II), a chalk [X] on front of the side to side divider (see DAPC_2017-5008-021_mark_lower_case_divider_X), and a chalk [3] on the back of the side to side divider near the middle compartment (see DAPC_2017-5008-022_mark_lower_case_divider_3).  The bottom drawer is marked with a graphite [IV] at the back (see DAPC_2017-5008-024_mark_lower_case_bottom_drawer) and the next drawer up is scratched with a [Do] in script also on the back (see DAPC_2017-5008-023_mark_lower_case_middle_drawer).
