Two chairs belonging to Alice M. Longfellow had come from the family home in Portland and were there in 1870. Those two chairs were willed to Alice's sister, Mrs. Joseph G. Thorp, in 1928, but remained in the Craigie house until 1942, when they were sent with a number of other items to Mrs. Thorp's daughter, Mrs. Ellett de Berry, in Texas. A fifth chair was apparently never in the Craigie house and was part of the estate of Ms. Anne Thorp, daughter of Mrs. Joseph G. Thorp, in 1970."},{"label":"Dimensions","value":"Height 36.25 in. (43.2 cm)"},{"label":"Description","value":"Side chair made of mahogany with birch secondary wood and an upholstered slip seat.  The crest rail is serpentine and molded, carved in a sheath-of-wheat motif, with rounded and foliate-carved ears. The chair back has an interlaced, pierced and scrolled splat fitted into a shoe, the latter with a light molding along the upper edge and bead-molded stiles. The trapezoidal seat frame is molded along the top edge. Set within it is a last nineteenth-century or early twentieth-century rose twill-upholstered seat. The front and side rails are tenoned into the upper extension of the front leg. The front legs are Marlborough and the back legs are stump. Molded stretchers brace the legs: two side and one medial forming an h-shape and one rear mounted higher than the others.  Restored by Roland B. Hammond, Andover, MA, 1977.
