Both men lived in Boston. The piece descended in the family. After Captain Hickling's death in 1790, his widow Elizabeth (1740-1827) moved to Duxbury, Massachusetts, to live with their daughter Sarah, wife of Captain Gershom Bradford. Eliza's 1826 note deeds the desk to Sarah, and the desk presumably remained in the house through ownership by subsequent generations of the Bradford family. In 1968, the Duxbury Rural and Historical Society acquired the house built by Gershom and Sarah Bradford in 1808 along with its contents."},{"label":"Dimensions","value":"Height 42.875 in. The desk has an overall form typical of slant-front desks, but is constructed as a slant-front desk with one drawer over a three-drawer chest. The desk top is a single board joined to the sides with half-blind dovetails that are visible from the exterior of the case. The left and right sides of the case are each made of two stacked boards, one joined to the upper desk and one joined to the lower chest. The case back is made of two horizontal boards. Wooden spools are attached to the case back. The case bottom is made of a single board held in place with glue blocks. There is cove and half-round base molding along the front and side lower edges of the case. The ogee bracket feet at front and back are nailed in place. The side section of the front right foot has been replaced.  The slant-front writing surface is built with bread-board construction and has a shaped brass escutcheon with the script engraving [William Hickling]. The desk interior is constructed with two rows of compartments suspended over an extended writing surface. The top row consists of six square pigeonholes flanked by wide drawers. The drawers have solid drawer fronts with a single knob at the center top and full-height drawer sides. The fronts and sides are joined with half-blind dovetails; the sides and backs are joined with dovetails. The drawer bottoms are each constructed of a single board with the grain running front to back. The bottoms are nailed to the drawer fronts, sides, and backs. Near the bottom of each drawer is a shallow secret drawer accessed through the drawer back. The secret drawers each have a single knob of the same type as the visible drawers. The openings for the visible drawers each have a drawer stop set at the back.  The bottom row is divided into four shallow compartments that may have once held drawers. The outer compartments are each the width of the drawers above them; the inner compartments are each the width of three of the pigeonholes above them. The shelf that serves as the bottom surface of the bottom row has half-round molding along the front edge.  Below the fall-front writing surface are four graduated drawers. The top drawer is flanked by lopers and is structurally part of the upper desk. The lopers each have a single brass knob. The three lower drawers, structurally part of the lower chest, are full width. The drawers have solid drawer fronts and full-height drawer sides. Running strips are applied to the lower surfaces of the drawer sides. The fronts and sides are joined with half-blind dovetails; the sides and backs are joined with dovetails. The drawer bottoms are each constructed of a single board with the grain running front to back. The bottoms are chamfered along the front and side edges, let into grooves in the drawer fronts and sides, and nailed to the drawer fronts and drawer backs. The uppermost drawer interior has evenly spaced vertical grooves, possibly indicting that it once had interior compartments. The drawers each have a shaped brass escutcheon and two bail handles with back plates of the same design as the escutcheons. Some of the locks have been removed. Two drawer dividers separate the lower three drawers.
