The curved seat back has a square shape topped with two components: a turned crest rail and a rectangular curved tablet. Both are mortise and tenoned into two rear stiles, which are continuous with the rear legs. The crest rail is spindle-shaped with rings on either end flanking two swelled elements that culminate in a central ring. The tablet is painted or washed dark brown or black, matching the coating on the rest of the chair. It is decorated with light brown or gold edging and a central orange rectangle enclosed by a red border. Inside the rectangle are seven irregularly shaped diamonds formed by a series of zigzagging yellow and red lines; there is one brown sun shape within each diamond. The stiles, which terminate in a raked back scroll with visible hand saw marks, also frame an X-form back slat. It is composed of four pieces of wood: one continuous piece forming one half of the X and two pieces forming the other half of the X, all set into a circular medallion at the center. The central medallion is painted red and decorated with a brown flower formed by eight petals, one circle between each petal, and ten circles around the medallion edge. All medallion shapes have a black outline along one edge. Each component of the chair is also outlined with a light brown border. The trapezoidal seat frames caning that is likely replaced, evinced by the presence of additional holes on the top surface of the seat. Each side of the seat is composed of two stacked pieces of wood, the bottom pieces serving as the chair rail construction and the top pieces serving to frame the caning. The cane frame is mortise and tenoned together. It is attached to the seat rails at the front and sides with square pegs piercing the center of both boards. At the back it is screwed through the seat rail into the legs. The seat rail is mortise and tenoned to the legs at each corner while the cane frame fits over the front legs. The front exterior seat rail is painted with a design corresponding to the decoration on the tablet (seven irregular diamonds formed by red and yellow zigzagging lines with a brown sun inside each diamond atop an orange rectangle with red edging). The painted decoration is continuous between the seat frame construction and the cane frame above it, and the colors are much more vivid on the seat frame than on the tablet where the paint is significantly worn. On the cane frame and at the top of each front leg (flanking the central diamond decoration) is a reddish brown rectangle edged with yellow and decorated with three dark brown dots arranged vertically. The therm legs are mortis and tenoned to the lower seat frame construction, and the back legs rake backward. An H-shaped stretcher construction is mortis and tenoned to the legs below. Stretchers are rectangular with nails reinforcing the stretcher attachment at both rear legs."},{"label":"Date Digitized","value":"7/23/2018"},{"label":"Marks, Signatures, and
