Seward appears in the Boston Directories from 1833-1835 as a clockmaker, but in subsequent years, he is listed as a stable worker. Seward apprenticed with clockmaker John Sawin and for a time, was partnered with Alvah Skinner. This clock is marked also by Elnathan Taber. Taber was one of the Willards' favorite apprentices, and he acquired the Willard business in 1839. Behind the hinged dial door is the clock face dial which denotes time via roman numerals. It has a winding hole and hands to track the minutes and hour. The throat frame is trimmed in veneered molding and flanked by brass side arms. The tablet on the throat has gilded foliate decoration against a black background. The pendulum box is framed in veneered molding. The background of the tablet is painted black. A gilded frame envelopes a gilded foliate and ship motif. Above the central design at center of the pendulum box is the maker's inscription: [SEWARD/ BOSTON].
