(41.9 cm)"},{"label":"Description","value":"Yellow slat-backed fancy rocking chair with rush seat and bentwood arms.    The back has a continuous faux grained rectangular tablet with stenciled and hand-painted oak leaves on the sides and a fleur-de-lis with scrolling foliage at the center. The tablet has striping in brown and white. The turned and curved rear stiles are faux grained and are continuous with the back legs. Three narrow, round, horizontal splats, painted yellow, faux grained, and striped are grouped close together and run between the rear stiles.    The seat is covered in dun-colored painted rush. A skirt is nailed to the seat frame on all sides and painted with faux graining and striping. The seat rails are exposed at the front corners, faux grained, and striped. The seat is cut away at the back corners to fit the rear stiles. The chair has an associated cushion with a silk top cover embroidered with a floral motif and cotton bottom cover.    The arms of the chair are flat bent ribbons that are attached to the rear stiles with dowels and attached to the seat rail. The top surface of the arms has narrow vertical rectangles of gilding with a brown shadow line on the right side.    The front legs are turned at the top and taper to the rockers. The rocker is fitted to a through-mortise at the base of the front and rear legs, held in place by pins. The legs are joined to the seat rail with a round mortise and tenon joint. The legs are faux grained with a stylized acanthus leaf painted immediately below a ring turning at the top of each leg. The rings at the top of the leg are striped in brown paint. A pair of side stretchers attaches the front leg to the rear leg on both sides. A single stretcher is attached between the rear legs. Three curving, narrow, round stretchers are joined between the front legs, echoing the arrangement of splats in the back. The front stretchers are also faux grained and painted.    The painted finish is in very good condition. The front legs have been cut down. The chair has a metal plate engraved with the name "Joseph Peabody, Esq, Salem" attached to the inside of the right runner. See Marks.
