Its pervasive delicacy of proportion suggests a date early in the second decade of the 1800?ÇÖs; yet it is inscribed with the name of George Vannevar, a cabinetmaker who is first recorded in the Boston directory of 1823." ("The Editor?ÇÖs Attic," Antiques 22, no. 2 (August 1932): 48).    "The details of the acanthus carving on the legs of this sideboard bear a somewhat striking resemblance to those employed by Henry Connelly of Philadelphia. In other respects no similarity exists. The brasses, be it remarked, are new: Vannevar was evidently a first-rate cabinetmaker, and worthy of closer acquaintance. We shall be glad to learn more about him." ("Queries and Opinions," Antiques 16, no. 4 (October 1929): 318)."},{"label":"Subjects (AAT)","value":["Sideboards","Buffets"]},{"label":"Subjects","value":["Dining room furniture","Case goods"]},{"label":"Bibliography","value":"Article: "The Editor?ÇÖs Attic," Antiques 22, no. 2 (August 1932): 48-9. The piece is in three sections. The outer two sections are flanked by six reeded columns. The profile of the piece is flat and straight except for where the table surface curves around the top of each column. The left and right sections each have one drawer at top, with one knob at center and above, one keyhole surround. The drawers are situated over a cabinet door with a keyhole surround (on the left section, the cabinet door has the keyhole surround on the right side, it is inversed on the right section). The center section of the sideboard is set between two of the columns and has three drawers at top. The two outermost drawers of the center section are square, each with one knob at center and one keyhole surround above the knob. The center drawer has two knobs and one keyhole surround between the knobs. The drawers are situated above two drawers on either side of the two cabinet doors. The outer drawers are vertical rectangular in shape, each with one knob at center and one keyhole surround at top. The two adjacent cabinet doors each have a keyhole surround.    A carved, flattened urn decoration, turning, and a acanthus leaf motif mark the transition of the supporting columns into the legs of the side board. It is unidentifiable whether the columns and legs are one solid, continuous piece of wood or two separate pieces altogether. The legs terminate in ring and bun turned feet.    Brasses have been replaced."},{"label":"Date Digitized","value":"10/3/2017"},{"label":"Marks, Signatures, and Inscriptions","value":"Pencil inscription in center drawer: [George Vannevar / The Maker]."},{"label":"Materials","value":"Mahogany; Brass"},{"label":"Style","value":["Federal"]},{"label":"Basis of Date","value":"Date range based on known working dates of George Vannevar."},{"label":"Date (EDTF)","value":"D:00 M:00 Y:1813 - D:00 M:00 Y:1833"},{"label":"Basis of Origin","value":"Vannevar was active in Boston, Massachusetts around 1823."},{"label":"Place of Origin","value":"Boston, Massachusetts"},{"label":"Basis of Maker Attribution","value":"Inscribed by maker."},{"label":"Maker","value":["Vannevar, George, cabinetmaker, carpenter, and housewright, active about 1823-about 1853"]},{"label":"Other Name","value":"Serving board; Side board; Buffet"},{"label":"Object Type","value":["Sideboard"]},{"label":"Object Use","value":"Case furniture"},{"label":"Category","value":"Furniture"},{"label":"Title","value":"Sideboard"},{"label":"Date Modified","value":"7/17/2018"}],"description":"Sideboard","sequences":[{"@type":"sc:Sequence","canvases":[{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/winterthur/iiif/743f6589-5db0-4aaa-9f01-ca11aebae315/canvas/_1","@type":"sc:Canvas","label":"Sideboard","height":766,"width":1200,"images":[{"@type":"oa:Annotation","motivation":"sc:painting","resource":{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/winterthur/iiif/743f6589-5db0-4aaa-9f01-ca11aebae315/full/full/0/default.jpg","@type":"dctypes:Image","format":"image/jpeg","service":{"@context":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/context.json","@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/winterthur/iiif/743f6589-5db0-4aaa-9f01-ca11aebae315","profile":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/level2.json","tiles":[{"width":512,"scaleFactors":[1,2,4]}]},"height":766,"width":1200},"on":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/winterthur/iiif/743f6589-5db0-4aaa-9f01-ca11aebae315/canvas/_1","metadata":[]}],"thumbnail":{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/winterthur/iiif/743f6589-5db0-4aaa-9f01-ca11aebae315/full/500,500/0/default.jpg","@type":"dctypes:Image","height":500,"width":500}}]}],"thumbnail":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/winterthur/iiif/743f6589-5db0-4aaa-9f01-ca11aebae315/full/500,500/0/default.jpg","logo":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/winterthur/iiif/logo"}
