The back is bent for comfort with curved shoulders and a sophisticated vasiform splat that is attached to an applied shoe. The crest rail features a central, carved shell that is integral to the crest. The rear stiles are continuous with the back legs. The compass seat is mortised and tenoned together and pegged at seat rails. Triangular glue blocks are used at the seat?ÇÖs the front corners. The chair?ÇÖs slip seat retains its original grass stuffing as well as the burlap layer and leather cover, which was reinforced at a later date with strips of mattress ticking. The upholstery has large areas of damage. The slip seat also has two marks on the underside of the front rail: one in chalk [1]; one chiseled [V]. The front cabriole legs have ogee-shaped knee blocks and pad feet that have a slight reveal on the rear of the feet where they meet the leg. The rear legs are cylindrical above the stretchers and a thicker, square shape below the stretchers. Stretchers are H-shaped with an additional rear stretcher.
