At the school, boys and girls studied together, an uncommon practice for the period. Among their lessons was the sloyd woodworking method for children, which was meant to provide a holistic education for body and mind. Sloyd, or educational sloyd, was a system developed in Finland in the 1860s and practiced in the United States until the early 20th century. Margaret Homer Nichols Shurcliff taught carpentry and with Theodora B. Jones and Charlotte L. The bookcase was constructed for the corner in which it now sits; it sits against architectural moldings on either side. The case top is made of one L-shaped board with overhanging edges on the front and sides. There is a flat molding on the front of the bookcase attached to the edges of the case top. There is an ogee curve gallery on each side of the bookcase. The case sides are each made of one board with squared front edges. There is no case bottom. The bottom shelf is above the floor with a piece of wood covering the space between the shelf and the floor. There is no case back; the bookshelf is flush against the wall.    All of the shelves are an L-shape with the exception of the top two shelves, which are different on the right and the left as the left section has the space from those two shelves divided into nine cubbyholes, with three across and three down. With the exception of the additional shelf used to create the cubbyholes, each side of the bookcase has five shelves.
