The square back is moderately curved in profile. The crest rail is set inside the rear stiles and features a rectangular panel of figured mahogany veneer bordered by a cove. The lower splat has a carved rosette at the center set into a fan-shaped carving above and below. The rosette and fan are joined above and below to a serpentine horizontal splat that has applied rosettes at the joint with the stiles. The splat is joined with a mortise and tenon joint to the stiles. The ends of the stiles above the crest rail are carved into volutes. The stiles are continuous with the back legs and are molded along the front edge above the seat rail.    The replaced slip seat is fully upholstered and is secured to the front and rear seat rails with flat head screws; likely a modern intervention. A medial stretcher is joined to the front and rear seat rail with a half-dovetail joint. The seat is also supported by white pine corner blocks. The front and rear seat rails are red oak; the rear seat rail is veneered with mahogany. A convex curved molding with a bead on the upper and lower edges is glued to the front of the front seat rail. The tops of the side seat rails are molded to match the rear stiles.    The two front legs are sabre-shaped with molding on the fronts to match the molding of the rear stiles and the side seat rails. The two rear legs are square and canted outward. Rosettes are applied to the outside top of the front legs. The front and rear legs are attached to the seat rails with mortise and tenon joints. Modern furniture glides are nailed to the bottom of the legs.    The left rear stile has been repaired above the crest rail and the tablet has been secured with a flat headed screw. There is a repair at the front left leg."},{"label":"Date Digitized","value":"5/25/2015"},{"label":"Marks, Signatures, and Inscriptions","value":"None found"},{"label":"Materials","value":"Mahogany; White pine; Red oak; Unidentified textile"},{"label":"Style","value":["Federal"]},{"label":"Basis of Date","value":"Date range based on characteristics of design and construction."},{"label":"Date (EDTF)","value":"D:00 M:00 Y:1780 - D:00 M:00 Y:1820"},{"label":"Basis of Origin","value":"Boggs mark on others in the set may indicate this set is from a set of chair makers in the Philadelphia area"},{"label":"Place of Origin","value":"Vicinity of Boston, Massachusetts"},{"label":"Other Name","value":"Klysmos chair; Side chair; Occasional chair"},{"label":"Object Type","value":["Chair"]},{"label":"Object Use","value":"Seating furniture"},{"label":"Category","value":"Furniture"},{"label":"Title","value":"Klismos chair"},{"label":"Date Modified","value":"7/17/2018"}],"description":"Klismos chair","sequences":[{"@type":"sc:Sequence","canvases":[{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/winterthur/iiif/71cd9e13-788c-41eb-8003-3e025dea2a8f/canvas/_1","@type":"sc:Canvas","label":"dapc_2014-0229-001","height":1200,"width":800,"images":[{"@type":"oa:Annotation","motivation":"sc:painting","resource":{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/winterthur/iiif/d3bc7326-5b84-4797-8d8b-e44ea128a73f/full/full/0/default.jpg","@type":"dctypes:Image","format":"image/jpeg","service":{"@context":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/context.json","@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/winterthur/iiif/d3bc7326-5b84-4797-8d8b-e44ea128a73f","profile":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/level2.json","tiles":[{"width":512,"scaleFactors":[1,2,4]}]},"height":1200,"width":800},"on":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/winterthur/iiif/71cd9e13-788c-41eb-8003-3e025dea2a8f/canvas/_1","metadata":[]}],"thumbnail":{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/winterthur/iiif/d3bc7326-5b84-4797-8d8b-e44ea128a73f/full/500,500/0/default.jpg","@type":"dctypes:Image","height":500,"width":500}},{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/winterthur/iiif/71cd9e13-788c-41eb-8003-3e025dea2a8f/canvas/_2","@type":"sc:Canvas","label":"dapc_2014-0229-002","height":1200,"width":800,"images":[{"@type":"oa:Annotation","motivation":"sc:painting","resource":{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/winterthur/iiif/4c8781d1-fbd2-4d2e-8bb4-de157dd4e1bb/full/full/0/default.jpg","@type":"dctypes:Image","format":"image/jpeg","service":{"@context":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/context.json","@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/winterthur/iiif/4c8781d1-fbd2-4d2e-8bb4-de157dd4e1bb","profile":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/level2.json"},"height":1200,"width":800},"on":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/winterthur/iiif/71cd9e13-788c-41eb-8003-3e025dea2a8f/canvas/_2","metadata":[]}],"thumbnail":{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/winterthur/iiif/4c8781d1-fbd2-4d2e-8bb4-de157dd4e1bb/full/500,500/0/default.jpg","@type":"dctypes:Image","height":500,"width":500}}]}],"thumbnail":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/winterthur/iiif/d3bc7326-5b84-4797-8d8b-e44ea128a73f/full/300,300/0/default.jpg","logo":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/winterthur/iiif/logo"}
