(67.3 cm)"},{"label":"Description","value":"Empire-style standing desk constructed of cherry, white pine, mahogany veneer, brass, and black velvet. The case top is constructed of one board and attached with nails. The top?ÇÖs gallery has a straight back and the sides terminate with a cyma curve on the outer edge. The gallery is also attached with nails. The left side of the case is made of two boards, while the right side is made of one board. The case has veneered, squared, front edges. The back is constructed of one horizontal board that is let into a rabbet and nailed. This board is also stained in order to emulate the cherry wood of the majority of the frame. The bottom of the frame is made of one board that is nailed into a rabbet.    The front has three drawers and one door. The door is a large slant front door of panel-framed construction. It has mahogany sides attached with a full length spline joint. A decorative molding is nailed onto the front edge. The top surface was originally covered with black velvet that has worn away in most places. The interior of the door is a large open well and three pigeon holes of equal size. The three drawers are below the door. Of the three drawers, the top drawer is the largest and extends the length of the front. The other two drawers are on the same level and of different sizes. All have a vertical veneered front with an applied bead molding outlining the drawer. The drawer sides are full height with applied running strips. The drawer bottoms are constructed of one horizontal board with chamfering on the sides and the back. The bottom is then let into grooves in the front and sides, and nailed to the underside of the back. The top drawer rests on its original runners and the bottom drawers rest on the case bottom. The vertical divider and runners are attached with nails.    The legs have distinct sections. The tops are straight with ring turnings that terminate at a flat stretcher with decorative moldings. Below the stretcher, the legs change into a sabre leg form. The legs are attached with round mortise and tenon joints into a cleat on the bottom of the case. The stretchers are in an X-shape with an additional horizontal stretcher that separates the two legs forms. This X-shape stretcher pattern is made of board stretchers that are screwed into the cleat with a flat head screw. There is also a ring-turned stretcher between the flat, molded stretchers at the top of the sabre legs, which is attached with a round mortise and tenon joint. The sabre legs end in a brass, hairy-paw foot with castors that are attached with screws.    Areas of missing veneer on the front. Lower right drawer has added strips to make height adjustments.
