(53.3 cm)"},{"label":"Description","value":"Federal, mahogany, bowfront chest of drawers. The top of the chest is composed of two boards and dovetailed to the sides of the case. The top of the chest has overhanging front and side edges. The front and side edges of the top board are decorated with light wood banding in between light and dark wood stringing. The bowfront profile of the top is formed by a separate board joined to the top board with a butt joint. The left and right sides of the case composed of one board each. The front corners of the chest are canted. The sides of the case are dovetailed to the bottom board. The back of the case is composed of two horizontal boards that meet at a butt joint. The back board is attached to the case with nails at the sides and bottom. The case bottom composed of two boards. The bowfront profile of the bottom is formed by a separate board joined to the bottom board with a butt joint. The bottom board is nailed at the back and dovetailed at the sides. The edges of the case bottom are decorated with light wood banding in between light and dark wood stringing that extends along the front and sides of the case. Areas of the lower banding and stringing have become loose and have separated from the case.    The chest has four graduated drawers. The drawer fronts are made of horizontal lamination. The drawer fronts are veneered and with applied bead molding around their front edges. The veneer is inlaid with diamonds of light-colored wood; escutcheons are set into the centers of the diamonds. The drawers have oval brasses with acorn and leaf motifs. The right handle on the lower drawer is broken. The drawer sides come to full height and have applied running strips. The drawer bottoms are composed of two boards with the grain running side to side, with chamfering at the front, sides, and back. There is evidence of pit-sawing marks on the underside of the drawer bottoms. Dovetail construction joins the drawer sides to the fronts, as well as the drawer sides to the backs. The bottoms of the drawers are let into grooves at the fronts and sides and nailed to at the backs and fronts. The drawers rest on replaced runners. The drawer stops at the back of the case are possibly added or replaced. The three drawer dividers are veneered at the front, and mortised and tenoned to the sides of the case. The chest has bracket feet at the front and wedge-shaped feet at the back.
