A board hinged to the unfolding top opens to give access to the keyboard of 43 keys and the keywell. The board and the keywell are outlined in string inlay. The keywell is decorated with inlaid scrolls and acanthus leaves around a nameplate engraved: [J. CHICKERING / Boston]. Flanking the keywell, to the right, is a tablet framed in string inlay. The front left and right corners of the piano case curve from the front to the sides. The front faces of the corners are decorated with inlaid brass foliate motifs. The top opens fully to reveal the hammers and strings. Below the keyboard, the bottom rail is molded and framed in string inlay and also has a keyhole. The case sits on four carved legs. The tops of the front legs are carved with acanthus leaves and volutes above ring-turning, gadrooning, reel-turning, and reeding. The legs taper to the terminals, which feature disk-turning and spool turning atop castors. Suspended from the middle of the frame is a lyre-shaped pedal box. The lyre frame is carved with acanthus leaves and volutes.
