(27.1 cm)"},{"label":"Description","value":"William and Mary-style side chair made of maple with oak secondary wood, with a leather-upholstered back and seat.  Surmounting the contoured chair back is a flat-top, serpentine-ended crest rail. The fronts of the crest rail and the rear stiles are curved and outlined with bead molding. There is a lower, rectangular stay rail. Two contoured, rectangular rails are mounted vertically between the crest rail and stay rail. A contoured, leather-upholstered panel is mounted on the front surfaces of the vertical rails, which remain visible on the back of the chair but are hidden on the front. The front surface of the panel is outlined in a row of upholstery tacks. The trapezoidal seat is upholstered over the frame. A row of upholstery tacks outlines the lower edges of the seat. The baluster-turned front legs terminate in blocked Spanish feet. Between the front legs is a double-ball-and-reel-turned stretcher. There are rectangular rear and side stretchers. The original brownish leather, applied about 1720, remains on the piece beneath a second layer of red leather, applied about 1790.
