The top lid is a solid piece of mahogany with an integral half-round molded into the edge at the front and sides. When closed, the molding overhangs the sides and front giving the appearance of an attached top and disguising the piece?ÇÖs functional aspects. The front panel is attached to the lid with hinges that allow the panel to lay flat when open. The front panel is pine with a red-wash on the interior. The exterior of the front panel is veneered with a figured mahogany cartouche bordered by alternating light and dark wood stringing, set into a rectangular frame of figured mahogany with mitered corners also bordered at the edge of the panel with light wood stringing. An oval shaped brass bail pull, likely original, is fixed at the center.    Under the lid there is a fixed top attached to the case sides with a floating spline joint reinforced below by finished glue blocks. The fixed top is cut into an arch to form a back rest with a half-round molding edge.    A single removable shelf made of black walnut rests flush to the fixed case front on cleats attached to the case sides, front and back. The removable shelf has a round basin hole with a rounded-over edge. An earthenware chamber pot fits within the hole and rests on the case bottom. The hole has a loosely fitting black walnut lid to cover the chamber pot. The lid is turned in a rosette pattern to create an integral handle at the center.    The fixed, lower half of the case front is attached to the case sides with large un-dressed pine glue blocks oriented vertically at the joint. The front is unfinished pine on the interior, veneered on the exterior to match the hinged front panel. An ornamental brass bail pull is fixed to the fixed panel.    The case sides are single boards of pine with square edges that are attached to the case back with large hand-cut, through dovetail joints exposed at the rear. The exterior of the case sides are veneered with figured mahogany; the interior upper portion is red-washed and varnished. A bail pulls are attached to the exterior of both sides; the pulls are more massive than those on the front and make the commode portable.    The case back is two boards, arranged horizontally and butt joined. The upper board is mahogany, varnished on the interior. The lower board is pine, red washed and varnished on the interior and with a plain red wash on the exterior. The back panel has two faint chalk marks (see marks). The back extends to the floor to form a rear bracket foot, cut into a straight sided arch at the center.    The case bottom is a single board, attached to the case sides and the case front with large, undressed pine glue blocks.    The skirt is cut into a serpentine curve at the front that is continuous with the curve of the French feet. The skirt front is a separate board that is attached with a spline joint to the case sides; the joint is reinforced by shaped glue blocks. The front of the skirt is veneered with figured mahogany that covers the joinery and unifies the arrangement. The skirt is cut into a serpentine curve at the sides that is continuous with the curve of the foot at the front and rear. The side skirt is an extension of the side boards.    The flair on the outside edges of the front French feet is built up from laminated wood. The side of the rear feet is an extension of the case side attached to the back with glue blocks. The veneer from the sides extends over the curved portion.    One large split has propagated across the back.
