Kinsey sat in the Senate gallery and noted what he saw. As the two traveled through mid-western cities, Kinsey commented on the people and scenery. On the return trip, Kinsey and Bemans journeyed along the Great Lakes to New York State and then New England, stopping at Niagara Falls./nJohn Kinsey was born and raised in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; his parents were Quakers. we left behind, and took cars for the Conecticut Shore. we passed throug some   interesting places. one point where we stoped, there was 6 trains of cars standing all for   different points, after passing through Wocester and several other small Manufactoring   villages we reached Connecticut Shore. here we took the boat for New York and had a   pleasent trip across the Sound, we spent a day here visiting the vairious machine shops,   and in the evening we visited a picture gallery, we saw some very handsome paintings.   some looked like life. 28th at 2 O clock we took the boat and as we went down the bay we   had a fine view of the City and shipping. as we passed into Amboy bay we had some fine   scenery the rich yellow grain wafted with the breeze.  we took the cars at Sout Amboy for   Camden. it was very warm and dusty, we had a view of stepped in an omnibus and were   soon carried to Gerard College and were shown around by a man who is employed for   that purpose, when reaching the roof one of the finest views meets the eye, my friend W   B B was in perfect extacy in looking over the City and the surrounding scenery which the   country affords. there is a large business done on it in   getting lumber to market mostly pine which the north of Pennsylvania abounds, we cross   this stream in a ferryboat and I was proud to think I was floating on this fine stream   which drains so large a tract of that favoured state, where peace and plenty does prevail,   and liberty has her sway. but we have left that land of freedom and plainly can a stranger   see the broad difference, in the general appearance of the farm housesâ€™es and cultivation   of their land, we are now traveling through the state where itis said the farmers move   there barns when the manure increases around the door so as to be inconvenient in getting   stock in and out, and if I was to judge from the appearence of some of the crops I saw I   could not doubt the assertion. but I must say some of the land has fell into the hands of   northern men, for some distance and stoped at Ellicots mills I had the   pleasure of meeting with cousin H S who is Agent for the rail road at this place, after   winding around the hills for some distance we crossed the Potomac at Harpers Ferry and   followed the river most of the way to Cumberland. we had some fine scenery on this rout   winding around the foot of the mountains and some places they come out so abrupt that   they were obliged to tunnel them in making the road, we arrived at Cumberland at 5   Oclock after riding over more then 200 miles from Washington, miles above pittsburg. this river navigation   is improved by dams and Locks so that Steam boats run from here to Pittsburg, as we   passed down the river in the banks were numerous coal mines. at Brownsvill the vein was   but little above water level, as we went down they still got further from the waters edge,   and I should suppose at Pittsburg it is as much as 200 feet up to the coal, and country more so then any I ever have   visited, soil is too rich for raising oats it will not stand up, grows so much straw, wheat   does tolerable well raise 30 or 40 bus to the ac, but corn brings all up to the mark, corn   was just coming out in tossil and stood 12 foot high the ground had been planted 15 years   in succession, I visited some fine farms in this vicinity one of 20 thousand Acers twenty   five hundred planted with corn all in on field, this land is a rolling
