Upper case: The upper, tambour section of the desk has bead and cove molding along the front and side edges of the case top. The back of the upper case is composed of one horizontal board nailed at the top and sides. There are scrub plane marks on the back of the upper case. The upper case bottom is composed of one board. The bottom board is let into a groove at the front and dovetailed at the sides. There is evidence of glue on the bottom of the upper case. The dovetails at the sides of the case extend past the case bottom. The front of the upper case has two tambour doors flanking a central prospect door. The tambour doors have canvas backs. The knobs of the tambour doors are attached to a solid, three-beaded section of wood. The knob on the left tambour door is missing. The tambour doors open to reveal two stacked drawers atop two side-by-side pigeonholes. The pigeonholes have cyma curve valences. The interior drawer dividers are pine with mahogany facings. The central prospect door is one solid piece of wood. The front of the prospect door has horizontal veneer, banding, and light wood stringing. The escutcheon on the prospect door is likely replaced. The prospect door opens to reveal three vertically arranged drawers. The prospect drawers have solid fronts. The drawer sides come to full height. The drawer bottoms are composed of one board with the grain running side to side. There are pit-saw marks on some of the drawer bottoms. Dovetail construction joins the drawer sides to the front, as well as the drawer sides to the back. The bottom of the drawer is let into a groove at the front and sides, and nailed to the underside of the back. The interior drawers rest on dust boards. Lower case: The lower case is deeper than the upper case. The top of the lower case is composed of two boards attached to the tops of the legs. There are screw holes at the back edge of the top board that lead into the back board. Ogee molding the depth of the upper case is nailed to the sides of the lower case top to help secure the upper case, the back of which sits flush with the back of the lower case. A veneered leaf the width of the desk his hinged to the front edge of the desk top. Ogee molding is nailed to one long edge of the leaf so that it abuts the upper case when the leaf is closed. The ogee molding is chamfered at the corners so it abuts the similarly chamfered ogee molding on the sides of the case top. The leaf opens to reveal a flat writing surface covered in old, green baize. The sides of the lower case are veneered and composed of one board each. The back of the lower case is composed of one horizontal board. The lower case back is attached to the legs with a spline joint. Pit-sawing marks are visible on the interior of the lower case back. The case front is fitted with two lopers and two drawers. The knob on the right loper is loose. The drawer fronts have vertical veneer and applied bead molding along the edges of the drawer. The hardware on the drawer fronts appears to be replaced. Circular indentations on the drawer fronts reveal where previous hardware was attached. The drawer sides come to full height. Plane marks are visible on the drawer backs. The drawer bottoms are composed of one board with the grain running side to side with chamfering at the fronts and sides. Pit-sawing marks are visible on the drawer bottom. There is a large split in the bottom of the lowest drawer. Dovetail construction joins the drawer sides to the backs, as well as the drawer sides to the fronts. The bottoms of the drawers are let into grooves at the fronts and sides, and nailed to the undersides of the backs. The drawers rest on original runners, which are nailed into place. The top front rail and bottom front rail are mortised and tenoned to the case sides. The divider between the two drawers is let into a groove and nailed into place. The face of the divider is veneered. The lower case has four squared, tapered legs. The front portion of the front legs has unidentified light wood stringing."},{"label":"Date Digitized","value":"5/25/2015"},{"label":"Marks, Signatures, and Inscriptions","value":"Pencil mark on the underside of the bottom prospect drawer:?á[L].
