The top board has a hinged secondary board that folds underneath so the lid can be propped by a retracting post and a top bar. With the top propped, the keys, strings, and hammers are visible. The case features recessed panels. The edges are molded. The side arm forms an s-curve and on the outside, they are carved with scrolls and acanthus leaves. The back of the fallboard is inlaid with curves and scrolls around a nameplate engraved with maker's name. The fallboard opens to reveal the keys. There is a key slip below the key bed. The piano has two front and one rear leg, all of which are intricately carved. The sides of the legs are carved with a depiction of phoenix wings, acanthus leaves, scrolls, and grooves. The lower halves of the legs have a forward scrolled plume. The legs terminate in forward scrolls that are grooved and sit on shallow paws. A pedal box is fixed to the case and is shaped like a lyre. The lyre frame is carved with volutes, s- and c-curves."},{"label":"Date Digitized","value":"10/9/2018"},{"label":"Materials","value":"Rosewood; Unidentified metal"},{"label":"Style","value":["Empire"]},{"label":"Basis of Date","value":"According to Helen Rice Hollis, in \"Jonas Chickering: 'The Father of American Pianoforte-making,'\" (Antiques August 1973), pg. 230, this 1840 instrument is the first grand piano Chickering made."},{"label":"Date (EDTF)","value":"D:00 M:00 Y:1840"},{"label":"Basis of Origin","value":"Boston indicated by stamp."},{"label":"Place of Origin","value":"Boston, Massachusetts"},{"label":"Basis of Maker Attribution","value":"Labeled by maker.
