The adjustable top is designed for holding books or portfolios and consists of two open rectangular frameworks hinged at the bottom to a central fixed board. The solid fixed board has slightly rounded ends and bead molding along the top edges of the long sides. The hinged leaves are constructed with a rectangular outer frame around a lattice-work interior composed of one horizontal and three vertical stiles. The two outer vertical stiles are notched to allow the horizontal stile to cross through the center. The center vertical stile is flat on both the front and back and mortise and tenoned into the outer frame at the top and bottom. The outer vertical stiles are flat on the front and rounded on the back and appear to attach to the outer frame with plugged screws. The horizontal stile is made of two separate boards and mortise and tenoned into the outer frame at the ends. Three butt hinges connect each leaf to the central fixed board and allow them to be closed to a vertical position or opened to an almost horizontal position.  The adjustable top section is supported at either end by a carved lyre-shaped vertical support which is mortise and tenoned into the fixed board. The exterior face of each support has a raised carved border with scrolls at the top and bottom and a central fleur-de-lys behind the bottom scrolls. Each vertical support is mortise and tenoned into a block at the base with an applied ring-turned mount in the center of the exterior face. Integral splayed cabriole legs extend out either end of the block and terminate in scrolled feet with castors. The exterior face of the legs is molded with a concave center and raised, rounded edges with a flat scroll at the interior tip of the bottom edge. The interior face of the legs has a carved-out track with five notches that interact with the adjustable upper framework for raising and lowering the portfolio stand leaves. The legs are joined by one central turned stretcher with a stylized lotus leaf motif in the center and baluster-form ends.  The framework that allows the hinged portfolio stand leaves to be raised and lowered consists of two rectangular frames constructed of four stiles each which cross below the fixed board in an X-form. The horizontal stiles in each frame are spindle-turned while the vertical stiles are flat-sawn. The horizontal stile at the top of each frame is connected to the associated portfolio leaf frame with two fixed braces which are screwed into the exterior face of the leaf frame and hinged to the horizontal stile. The horizontal stile at the bottom of each frame is inserted at both ends into the carved track on the interior of the legs and can be moved along the track and rested in any of the five notched housings. The vertical stiles connect the top and bottom horizontal stiles so that when the bottom stile is moved along the track, the associated portfolio leaf is either raised or lowered."},{"label":"Date
