According to the Zimmerman and Levy article, there are two inscriptions on the desk. Only one inscription, [Made by Richd Walker] is photographed and included in the DAPC information sheet, and according to the article, it is located on the side of the right-hand document drawer. There is no mention of the second inscription in the item's DAPC information sheet, but the article states that it is located on the side of the left-hand document drawer of the desk. In the article, Zimmerman and Levy attempt to transcribe the second inscription: [two illegible lines] / [illegible]ker [illegible]Iden / bound unto the Godly / Son of the adore Sd / Town and Country / man]. About the second inscription, Zimmerman and Levy state, "Despite the illegible sections, inscription documents an indenture, a common practice in which an apprentice learns the mysteries of a trade from his master. In due time an accomplished young artisan might set up his own shop and make furniture in the manner of, yet different from, that of his teacher. Structural and design variations that result from different hands?Çöand possibly closely related but different shops?Çömay better account for the range of workmanship and design in evidence among the larger furniture group." (Zimmerman and Levy, An Important Block-Front Desk, 440). This desk is nearly identical to a desk-and-bookcase owned by Winterthur, DAPC_1993-0083, attributed to maker John Welch. It is also similar to other items: a desk-and-bookcase owned by the Milwaukee Art Museum and a desk sold in 1922 James Paxton Temple sale, lot 1349. Zimmerman and Levy argue that this desk made by Walker has certain attributes that suggest these pieces are all related and thus, further study might reveal previously unknown information about the pieces, like, perhaps, the provenance of the desk-and-bookcase owned by the Milwaukee Art Museum discussed by Brock Jobe in the article, "A Boston Desk-and-Bookcase at the Milwaukee Art Museum," Antiques 140, no. 3 (September 1991), page 415."},{"label":"Subjects (AAT)","value":["Slant-front desks","Fall-front desks"]},{"label":"Subjects","value":["Desks"]},{"label":"Bibliography","value":"Article: Philip D.
