The melodeon lid is three boards of solid rosewood that are butt hinged allowing the case to open partially to uncover the keys, or to open fully to allow for greater sound volume. The top has a lock at the center. The interior case top is solid rosewood. A molding provides a ledge for propping up sheet music. The music stand is missing, but the pivots remain.    Each of the case sides is made up of two boards, a solid board of rosewood inset into a larger panel of oak. On the exterior the panel is veneered with a continuous piece of rosewood. The solid rosewood is exposed at the top edge of the panel and the keyboard-facing side of the panel; the exposed rosewood forms a raised rectangular molding above the interior top.    The keyboard contains 36 ivory veneered rosewood keys and 25 ebony keys. The molding beneath the keys is cut with alternating upright and inverted trefoils. The remnants of an interior red paper dust facing remain, badly deteriorated. The bottom of the case front is solid rosewood with an applied, double beaded molding along the upper and lower edge, and a round keyhole at center, with a surround to lock the melodeon in the closed position.    The case back is ebonized oak. The case bottom has an oak board covering the mechanical workings. A cast iron bracket for pedals is attached to the base, although the pedals are missing.
