Upper section: The upper case is surmounted by a cove molding with a plain frieze that has been veneered with cross banded mahogany. The upper case is divided into two columns of shelving. Six height-adjustable shelves are fitted into the interior with mahogany saw tooth strips applied to the central divider and the case sides. The shelves are faced with bead molding at the top and the bottom. The doors are solid mahogany. A half-round astragal molding is attached to the right hand door. Each door has six glass lights with half-round mullions mortised into the door stiles and rails. The doors are each attached to the case sides with three brass butt hinges. There is a lock on the right hand door and although there is a keyhole cut in the left door, with a keyhole surround, there is no evidence of a lock on the left door or a latch. The lowest shelf is attached to the case sides and also to a larger bottom board that overhangs the upper case at the sides and at the front. Lower section: The lower section has a top that is separate from the upper section. The lower section is also is divided vertically with a central partition separating two columns of shelves, with four height-adjustable shelves fitted into the interior, and mahogany saw tooth strips applied to the case sides and front. The doors are framed in solid mahogany with a solid mahogany panel. The front of the panel is veneered with figured mahogany, and the panel is surrounded by bead molding. The doors are each attached with two butt hinges. The right door is fitted with a lock and has an astragal molding attached. A flat base molding is nailed to the front and sides with an ogee molding at the top. The base molding is separating at the right side and interfering with the operation of the right hand cupboard door. Hinges have been replaced."},{"label":"Date Digitized","value":"5/26/2015"},{"label":"Marks, Signatures, and Inscriptions","value":"White paper label in pen lower front corner of inside of right door: [so called Thomas Jefferson's / secretary - not true to period / too late - about 1840].
