The lid has four figured walnut veneered rectangular panels surrounded by herringbone banding. Double cock-bead molding runs along the entire front edges of the case. The writing surface is covered with an unidentified textile, bordered with textile tape secured with decorative nails; the tape has torn away between the nails in many places. The interior has a central well and a central prospect door with an astragal-shaped burl veneered panel and an engraved keyhole surround. The door is flanked by four pigeonholes with scrolled valances over four drawers with concave astragal-shaped fronts and round metal knobs. These are flanked by a scrolled divider and two shelves over two drawers, all with concave astragal-shaped fronts. The case has three graduated tiers of drawers, double cock-bead molding forming the drawer dividers, ogee molding around the bottom, and straight bracket feet. The top tier of drawers contains two drawers; the other tiers have one drawer each. All the drawers are bordered by herringbone banding and have engraved escutcheons. The top drawers have their keyholes located at the pulls; the lower drawers have their keyholes at the center and their pulls toward the sides. All the escutcheons and pulls are original.
