The pedestal base is a substantial turned column. From the top, the pedestal decorations consist of a bead and cove, flaring outward into a wider band of eight convex facets; the facets are trapezoidal in shape with a rounded top and bottom. The pedestal flares downward into an uncarved section. Below the plain section is a bulb shape, carved into four stylized upwards facing lotus leaves with additional upwards points separating them. The carvings of the two side lotus leaves show noticeable overcuts. The pedestal next tapers inward to a small uncarved section, followed by a large ball shape. Oriented downwards covering the top half of the ball are four rounded petals, separated by carved points. The pedestal narrows dramatically, then flares back out into a wide ring. This narrow neck above a wide plain ring is repeated. The pedestal ends in a large flattened acorn shape. There are tool marks on the top side of the acorn shape and damage to the underside. Although the joints between the pieces are indistinguishable, there are signs that the pedestal was constructed in at least two pieces. The widest points of the pedestal are the downward petals, and the two plain rings below them. While the petals appear to have been carved from one large column of mahogany, the rings are made from several pieces of mahogany combined prior to turning to accommodate the width of the ring. The firescreen has four legs attached to the pedestal. The legs are curved, with a gradual slope that flares horizontally to the feet. Each leg meets the pedestal at three points, on the petals and on each of the two wide rings below them. The joinery between the legs and pedestal is unclear, aside from visible glue residue. The top section of each leg has a stylized scroll and acanthus leaf which is attached to the pedestal, a small squared block, and a larger acanthus leaf with three small graduated balls carved below the tip. The acanthus leaves appear to be a separate piece of mahogany from the lower part of the leg; the larger leaf overlaps with the lower piece of the leg to disguise the join. The outer face of the lower leg has an incised geometric decoration terminating in a double point. The attachments to the pedestal are also decorated. The middle attachment has a three dimensional scroll design on each side. The lower attachment is decorated with an upwards petal or point, a three dimensional Greek key design on each side, and a small downwards scroll shape. The feet are four sided, with a block shape that flares outwards at the base, sitting on a smaller tapered block. The leg is attached to the inner face of the upper block. The three outer faces have incised geometric decorations. Each foot also has a small four sided finial at the top. The outward flares of the two side faces of each foot are applied to the main block. One of these applied flares is missing. The incised geometric design extends into the area the applied flare covered, indicating that the design was carved prior to attaching the flared piece. The frame around the textile screen is constructed from four sections of mahogany with mitered corners. The frame pieces are joined with a small rectangular block at each corner, which is inset through both pieces of wood and reinforced by several nails from the back and one nail through the side face. Each section of the frame is decorated with incised geometric and scroll designs. There are additional applied moldings at the top and bottom of the frame. The top molding has a central scrolled spade shape with stylized foliate designs on a punched background. To each side are cut scrolls and foliage, punctuated by an incised Greek key. The bottom molding has a flat front drop at the center with a carved oval in the middle. To each side is a cut out scroll, which leads into a Greek key and carved cove end. The textile screen is a wool needlepoint with beadwork on an woven ground. The central vignette is of a landscape with buildings, made from various colors of glass beads. A paper backing with a colored wash creates a sunset behind the beadwork scene. The vignette is encircled with beaded foliate decorations, and needlepoint roses with leaves appear in the corners. The panel is damaged, with a strip missing near the bottom of the screen, and a hole through the cloth ground and the paper backing within the vignette. There are several layers of textile backing for the needlepoint screen, including pleated silk covering the back, now in poor condition due to age and with a large tear on the right side. The textile layers of the screen are reinforced by inner wooden framing along each side of the panel, and a central vertical wooden strip. Although these reinforcements are concealed by the textile components, acid damage to the cloth and the inability for light to pass through those areas reveals their placement. The screen is mounted on the pole with two brass braces. The top example is a plain brass ring encircling the pole and screwed to the top frame element of the screen. The bottom hardware is a wide brass collar around the pole with raised, textured lines as decoration. A small bracket at the top and bottom of the collar is screwed to the bottom frame element of the screen. A round screw knob pierces the collar and allows the brace to be tightened or loosened for adjusting the screen."},{"label":"Date Digitized","value":"7/25/2018"},{"label":"Marks, Signatures, and Inscriptions","value":"None found"},{"label":"Basis of Materials","value":"The wooden components of the piece are diffuse porous hardwood, with the color consistent with mahogany.
