The back of the chair is curved for comfort with a horizontally curved tablet crest rail. The ends of the tablet feature two relief-carved inward facing scrolls with five-pointed leafage facing toward the center. There is a rectangular panel of figured mahogany veneer with concave ends in the center of the tablet. The tablet is set into notches at the top front of the molded vertical rear stiles. Immediately below the tablet is a thick carved slat with four central rows of swag drapery and three hanging scrolls at each end. The rear stiles are joined to the seat rail and are not continuous with the rear legs.    The trapezoidal slip seat rests on four corner blocks which are screwed and glued to the seat rails. The seat has been reupholstered but the original webbing and marsh grass padding appear to be present under a dust cover on the bottom. Nail holes through the center of the front and back seat rails indicate that the slip seat was attached to the frame at one time. The side rails feature a mahogany veneered decorative rail above the unadorned lower rail. The top of the decorative rail continues the bead edge molding from the rear stiles while the front end is carved with acanthus leaves. The acanthus leaf carving continues at the top of the front sabre legs. Below the carving, the fronts of the legs feature bead edge molding matching the seat rails and rear stiles. The right front leg and both rear legs have knee blocks. The rear sabre legs are mortise and tenoned into the rear seat rail. There are metal L-shaped brackets attaching the rear legs to the side rails. The brackets are set into grooves so that they are flush with the surface of the legs and seat rails and are attached with screws. Both front legs have repaired breaks below the acanthus carving at the top. The left front leg has a screw through the front of the carving. The left rear leg has been repaired where it attaches to the rear stile.
