The rectangular back has a curved crest rail joined between the stiles. The crest rail has a curved central fan carved at the top with an oval shaped finger hole beneath the carving at the center. The lower edge of the crest rail is cut into a series of five hemispherical arches.  The splat rail is straight at the bottom and has five inverted arches cut along the top edge that align with the arches on the lower edge of the crest rail. Four slats are joined between the arches on the crest rail and the splat rail. The slats are turned, with a central ring that tapers to a bulb-shaped turning at the top and bottom. The rear stiles are joined to the seat rail and are continuous with the back legs.    The compass seat is framed with mortise and tenon joints that are pinned at the stiles. The seat shape is a variation on the traditional compass form, with a serpentine curve in the front. A pierced caning rail is attached to the inside of the seat rail beneath the replacement leather seat. The replaced seat is nailed to the seat rail. On the underside of the leather is a stamp from the Boston-based upholsterer.    The front legs have squared edges but curve in the shape of a cabriole leg. The rear legs are square and canted back. The legs are attached to the seat rail with mortise and tenon joints. Two round stretchers join the front and rear legs at the sides. A single round stretcher joins the rear legs. A single stretcher with a rectangular cross section connects the front legs and is curved inward under the seat, echoing the curve in the cabriole leg.
