(86 cm)"},{"label":"Description","value":"Upholstered rocking chair. The curved, oblong back has a serpentine profile, surmounted by a crest rail carved with flowers and leaves. The crest rail is joined to the back with brackets, which may be later additions. The curved wood outline of the chair back is decoratively reeded; the rear stiles are continuous with the back legs. The arms are joined to the rear stiles, and glued to arm supports. The arm supports are continuous with the front legs. The arms are upholstered, and terminate in carved, foliate c-scrolls.  The rounded, trapezoidal seat is framed. Original construction is unclear; the frame is now supported by secondary pine rails, attached to the frame with nails and screws, and glued corner blocks. The legs are bolstered with modern L-brackets where they are joined with the frame. The upholstery materials are original. Trim is missing on the back surface of the chair. The seat has sprung; the dust cloth has torn away, revealing the original springs and jute webbing. The front seat rail is veneered and incised with decorative lines along the bottom edge. The front legs are cut into a modified cabriole form. A carved decorative scallop shape follows the serpentine profile of the front stile, spanning the curve where the arm support transitions into the front leg. The rear legs are stump legs. The legs are joined to bends that extend in front of and behind the legs.
