The front of the lid has two inlaid eight-point compass stars each set in a veneered rectangular panel bordered by herringbone banding. The lid is attached to the case by butterfly hinges and is supported by lopers with metal pulls. Tack holes along the edges of the writing area indicate that it was originally covered, likely in a textile or leather. Within the interior, two pigeonholes over two stepped drawers run along each side, with scrolled dividers along the exposed sides; three clusters of two pigeonholes over two drawers are separated by vertical document drawers with turned half columns on the front. Each interior drawer has its original round metal knob and a figured walnut veneered front bordered with herringbone banding; the pigeonholes have their original scrolled valances. A slide with an astragal-molded front edge extends the width of the central drawers and provides access to an interior well. The case has three graduated tiers of drawers, with cock-bead molding around the drawer openings. The top tier has three drawers; the bottom two tiers consist of one drawer each. The outer top drawers are veneered and bordered with herringbone banding. The center top drawer and the two full-width drawers each have two veneered panels bordered with herringbone banding; the panels extend to the top and sides of the drawer and flank the keyhole escutcheon. The engraved escutcheons and the drop pulls are modern; they are the third set of pulls and escutcheons and are fitted into the original holes. Holes from the second set of pulls and escutcheons have been plugged and the veneer restored over them. The drawer sides are dovetailed into place, and the drawer bottom is beveled at the front end and secured with brads. A dust board between the first and second tier of drawers extends almost to the back; there is no dust board between the second and third tier. The base molding is ogee. The bun feet are tenoned through blocks nailed to the baseboard as well as through the baseboard itself. The right rear foot is a replacement, and both left feet have been repaired at the shaft. The three planks of the backboard have been reset, and the desk has been refinished."},{"label":"Date Digitized","value":"7/20/2018"},{"label":"Marks, Signatures, and Inscriptions","value":"Pencil inscription on the right side of the right document drawer: [This desk repaired by A [?] M [?] August 20, 1861.] Ink inscriptions on the left side of the left document drawer, in eighteenth century handwriting: [Joseph P [?] e [?]] and [Samuel [?]]."},{"label":"Materials","value":"Walnut; Figured walnut; White pine; Unidentified metal"},{"label":"Style","value":["William and Mary"]},{"label":"Basis of Date","value":"Date range provided by the Art Institute of Chicago, 2016."},{"label":"Date (EDTF)","value":"D:00 M:00 Y:1700 - D:00 M:00 Y:1735"},{"label":"Basis of Origin","value":"Place of origin identified as probably Boston by the Art Institute of Chicago, 1981.
