It is a faithful copy made of the original by Vandegrift. Early entries describe routine drills and inspections, the living conditions of soldiers, dress parades, sabre exercises, and leisure time in Wilmington, Delaware. On Feb. 18, 1863, Vandegrift was ordered to Camp Wallace, near Salisbury, Maryland., where his main responsibility was policing the area for deserters and smugglers. On June 29, 1863, Vandegrift and his company were camped near Westminster, Maryland. when they ran across southern troops. They attacked J.E.B. Stuart's cavalry, then travelled to Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. They were quickly driven back and Vandegrift's brother, Willie, was killed. After moving around in Maryland, Vandegrift learned on May 22, 1864 that his unit had been ordered from cavalry to the infantry. On June 5, he was assigned to the 6th Army Corps Army of the Potomac. He served in a battle at Petersburg, Virginia. Six weeks later, Vandegrift was reassigned to the cavalry and headed back north./nHarrison Vandegrift was from Port Penn/Odessa, Delaware. He served in the United States Army from August 29, 1862 to June 6, 1865./nThere is an unexplained break in the passages between June 29, 1863 and January 1, 1864. At the end of the entry for June 29, Vandergrift lists the offices of Company C. He then records the history of losing his haversack, which included the diary, and its eventual recovery. Following this, he listed the members of Company C."},{"label":"Date (EDTF)","value":"D:00 M:00 Y:1863 - D:00 M:00 Y:1864"},{"label":"Creator","value":"Harrison Vandegrift"},{"label":"Place","value":"Wilmington, Delaware; Salisbury, Maryland; Westminster, Maryland"},{"label":"Format","value":["Manuscript"]},{"label":"Subjects","value":["Diaries","Men-Diaries","Soldiers","United States-History-Civil War, 1861-1865-Personal narratives."]},{"label":"Identifier","value":"Document 822\n79x340"},{"label":"Rights","value":["No Copyright - United States"]},{"label":"Source Collection","value":["Harrison Vandegrift Diary (Doc. 822)"]}],"description":"Diary of Harrison Vandegrift","sequences":[{"@type":"sc:Sequence","canvases":[{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/winterthur/iiif/4442a102-13ca-4146-b336-5333d92cc8ea/canvas/_1","@type":"sc:Canvas","label":"1","height":2340,"width":2733,"images":[{"@type":"oa:Annotation","motivation":"sc:painting","resource":{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/winterthur/iiif/297c1936-7e8e-4735-a970-995677dbd8ef/full/full/0/default.jpg","@type":"dctypes:Image","format":"image/jpeg","service":{"@context":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/context.json","@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/winterthur/iiif/297c1936-7e8e-4735-a970-995677dbd8ef","profile":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/level2.json","tiles":[{"width":1024,"scaleFactors":[1,2,4]}]},"height":2340,"width":2733},"on":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/winterthur/iiif/4442a102-13ca-4146-b336-5333d92cc8ea/canvas/_1","metadata":[{"label":"Transcription","value":"March 1913 Because of the dilapidated condition of the original records kept during a part of my term of Service in the army in our Civil War I have made this copy H.
