The pediment of the bookcase is fitted at the center with a clock made by James Doull of Charlestown, Massachusetts. The clock is in working order. Desk: The top of the fall-front desk is made of two boards and is dovetailed to the case. The front and side edges of the top have quarter-round molding. The left and right sides of the desk are composed of one board each, with three-quarter reeded columns at the front corners of the desk front. The desk has three graduated drawers and two lopers with brass knobs. The lower drawers fronts have horizontal veneer and banding. The drawer sides are full height. There is evidence of riving on the drawer back. The drawer bottom is composed of one board with the graining running side to side and chamfering at the front and sides. The drawer bottom is reinforced with glue blocks. Dovetail joinery attaches the drawer sides to the back. The bottom of the drawer is let into a groove at the front and sides, and nailed to the underside of the back. The drawer rests on original runners, which are set into the frame and attached to the case sides. The top drawer has two dividers running from the front to the back of the drawer. The back of the desk is composed of two horizontal boards butted together. The desk bottom composed of two boards that are attached to the case using glue blocks and dovetail joinery. The front and side edges of the desk bottom have bead molding. Arched skirts extend beneath the front and sides of the case bottom. The desk rests on four baluster legs, which taper from the round baluster to a delicate end with rings. The legs are attached to the case with screws, which are fitted into pockets that extend the length of the case. The fall-front door is composed of one board with bread board ends and is attached to the case with two surface hinges. The exterior of the door is decorated with horizontal veneer and inlay. The door opens to reveal a slanted desk top covered in green baize with concave inset trays in the top of the desk. Bookcase: The top of the bookcase appears to be dovetailed to the sides of the case. The front and sides of the bookcase top are decorated with integral cove moldings. The clock sits on top of the arched pediment and is flanked with outward facing scrolls. The pediment is nailed into place. Ball and spire brass finials decorate the pediment. The top of the bookcase has a solid, closed gallery that extends along the front, sides, and back of the piece. The left and right sides of the bookcase are composed of one board each with squared front edges. Nails attach the back of the case. The bottom of the bookcase slides into the molding on top of the desk. Metal braces at the back of the bookcase connect the case back to the desk. The interior of the bookcase is veneered. The bookcase has two doors with gothic arched glass panes. The fronts of the doors are veneered and inlaid. There is bead molding around the edges of the glass panes. Nail indentations on the backs of the doors indicate that cloth once covered the backs of the doors. The lock on the inside of the left door appears to have been replaced. The doors opening to reveal a mirrored door atop a central prospect unit. The central prospect unit and mirrored door are flanked by three shelves and two drawers on either side. The two top shelves on either side of the prospect unit are adjustable. The mirrored door appears to be panel-framed with the gothic arched mirror running almost the entire length of the door. The mirror is surrounded with bead molding. Banding and inlay decorate the edges of the door front. The mirrored door opens to reveal the clock pendulum. A secondary door appears to conceal the weights of the clock. The prospect door is composed of multiple pieces of wood with bread board construction. The prospect door front has vertical veneer with banding along the edges of the door. The prospect door opens to reveal three drawers arranged in a column above two pigeonholes. The prospect drawers and bookcase drawers have solid fronts. The drawer sides come to full height with slight chamfering on the front and sides. Dovetail joinery attaches the drawer sides to the front and back. The bottom of the drawer is let into a groove in the front and sides and glued to the underside of the back. The dust boards have mahogany facing strips."},{"label":"Date Digitized","value":"5/25/2015"},{"label":"Marks, Signatures, and Inscriptions","value":"Enameled on the face of the clock: [James Doull / Charlestown].
