Desk: The desktop is composed of six boards that form a panel framed, slanted desk lid attached to a fixed board with two hinges. It is unclear how the fixed board is attached to the case. The top has overhanging edges at the front and sides terminating in glued cove and bead molding. The molding has been lost where it attaches to the fixed board. It appears that the desk once had a gallery to support the open lid, evinced by nail holes at the back edge of the fixed board, changes and shadows in finish, and a short back rail for the desk frame. The top of the desk lid is covered with seemingly original wool baize that has been significantly worn. The sides, back, and front of the upper desk frame are each composed of one board with squared edges. They are mortise and tenoned together and reinforced with screws. The front board of the desk frame has a wooden keyhole surround. A long thin drawer with a wooden knob can be pulled out of a square cut into the right side of the desk frame. The drawer has a solid front and is constructed with single dovetails. The sides are full height, and the drawer bottom is attached with glue. The drawer is attached to a block stop with a single hinge, allowing it to be bent adjacent to the desktop. The bottom of the desk frame is composed of four boards. A nailed cove and bead molding surrounds the bottom of the desk frame on all sides. The desktop is secured with glue blocks and screwed into the lower interior. Many of these glue blocks are missing, and a later pine rail supports the desk frame. Additional nails have also been added on the exterior to secure the desk.  The interior of the desk is primarily open. The recessed panel inside of the lid is filled with a mirror surrounded by applied bead molding. The desk has a fixed organizer at the interior back with two levels. At the top there are five pigeonholes, and below there are two interior drawers. Three later screws have been added to interior of the desk bottom.  The interior drawers are adjacent to one another. They have solid fronts with a light wash at the center and a darker wash simulating banding around the edges. They have wooden knobs. The drawer sides are full height and constructed with dovetails secured with nails. The drawer bottoms are composed of single boards with grain running from side to side. They are glued to the drawers. The bottoms are long at the back, serving as drawer stops. The drawers sit within a grooved construction on full dust boards.  Lower case: The front and back of the lower case are panel framed with a nailed cove and bead molding surrounding the recessed center panel. The right side of the lower case holds four drawers while the left side holds four removable false drawer fronts with foliate wooden pulls. The bottom side rails stand proud of the lower case, parallel to the desk. The tops of the rails are surrounded with integral bead molding on all sides. Within the gaps separating the desk and lower rail from the lower case front, two pierced ogee curved wooden brackets are attached on either side. The upper brackets are carved with two large and two small scrolls. They are attached with screws, and visible nail holes suggest that these brackets may have been removed and reattached. The bottom brackets have five scrolls: a dominating central scroll with a dotted central circle and four smaller scrolls. All of the brackets are edged with cove molding. The bottom brackets are attached with nails. The case has four turned feet terminating in wooden castors. The feet seem to be attached with mortise and tenon joints or pegs, and the castors are screwed.  The four drawers on the right side of the case are stacked vertically. They are faced with solid wood and have foliate wooden pulls: carved branches with leaves. The drawer fronts are surrounded with integral cove and bead molding. The drawer sides are full height and constructed with dovetails. The drawer backs are shorter than the sides and fronts. The drawer bottoms are single boards with grain running from side to side and chamfering at the fronts and sides. The drawer bottoms are let into grooves at the front and sides and nailed to the underside of the drawer backs. The drawers rest on runners, and the entire interior construction, including three dividers, are attached with mortise and tenon joints."},{"label":"Date Digitized","value":"1/29/2019"},{"label":"Marks, Signatures, and Inscriptions","value":"Pencil mark on back of false top drawer front: [x 40].
