PORTER]. According to Richards and Evans, name branding was a rare practice to do on formal seating furniture, and therefore the name \"Porter\" could be someone other than the chairmaker, such as an owner or upholsterer. There is a William Porter listed as a distiller who can be found in Boston Directories from as early as 1789, \"whose occupation suggests he owned one or more brands with which to stamp the containers that held his products.\" (see Nancy E. The trapezoidal seat has a curved front edge and over the rail upholstery; the show upholstery is missing.
