(58.4 cm)"},{"label":"Description","value":"Empire-style mahogany chest of drawers with an upper stepped drawer unit. The top of the main, lower case is constructed from one large pine board forming the majority of the width, oriented side to side, with narrow strips nailed on each end, oriented front to back. One large piece of mahogany veneer is laid over the whole case top. Half-round mahogany moldings are glued to the front and side edges of the case top, creating a small overhang. The case top also has a supportive frame screwed to the underside, made from pine.    The sides of the lower case have a vertical panel, with the top and bottom frame elements connected to wide front and rear stiles with double mortise and tenons. The stiles are pine, with mahogany facing on the exterior. The panel is a single solid mahogany board, recessed on the inside and outside. The inside of the panel is chamfered and has marks from a toothing plane. The panel sits in a groove at the top and bottom. It is unclear whether the frame elements are one piece of pine with a groove cut into it and mahogany veneer on the outside; or an inner piece of pine with a rabbet edge, and a mahogany facing forming the remainder of the groove.    The lower case has four drawers accessed from the front, with the top drawer projecting farther than the bottom three. Each front corner has a decorative column, slightly tapered out from top to bottom. These columns are set into an upper square block and a lower rounded block with round mortise and tenons. The upper block is mahogany, with figured mahogany veneer on the front face. The lower block has a thicker mahogany facing. The columns are also covered with a figured mahogany veneer. Stamped brass mounts accent the top and bottom of each column. There are white paint splatters on the front of the piece, most noticeably on the right column and bottom drawer front.    The back of the lower case is constructed with two vertical panels. The panels are connected with a tongue and groove to a vertical support between them, and are most likely set into grooves in the sides as well. The center support projects slightly beyond the panels on the exterior and interior. The connections between the case back and the top and bottom appear to be simple butt joints. The back panels and vertical support are pine.    The lower case bottom is a single pine board, attached to the case sides with mortise and tenons. It rests above a frame or apron on all four sides of the piece. The exteriors of the case bottom and apron have mahogany veneers or facings. The piece may originally have had feet, but it now rests on the bottom edge of the apron.    The four drawers of the lower case are graduated in size. The uppermost, overhanging drawer is the largest; the lower three drawers increase slightly in size from top to bottom. The drawers rest on runners inside the case, with the bottom drawer resting on the case bottom. The mahogany drawer supports appear to be original. They have chamfered edges and abut the drawer dividers at the front of the case, but do not reach all the way to the back of the case. The supports are nailed to pine support rails. These rails run from front to back and are attached with mortise and tenons to the front and rear stiles. Because of the width of the stiles, there is a gap between the support rails and the panels of the case sides. An additional strip of mahogany the same size as the drawer supports has been screwed to the supportive framing of the case top to prevent too much movement of the top drawer.    The uppermost drawer divider or rail is a wide pine board with figured mahogany veneer on the front edge. It attaches with mortise and tenons to the case sides. An additional strip is applied with glue to the underside of the top rail, aligning with the drawer dividers of the lower drawers to maintain proper spacing for the second drawer. The two lower drawer dividers are also pine with figured mahogany veneer, mortise and tenoned to the case sides. Drawer stops are applied to the drawer dividers. Most of the drawer stops appear to be replaced. Each divider has two small pine drawer stops, attached with small nails; there is also glue residue from the larger original drawer stops. The right side of the top drawer retains its original mahogany drawer stop in addition to the pine replacement. A graphite line was drawn in front of each drawer stop to guide their placement.    The drawer fronts are pine, with figured mahogany veneer on the exterior and mahogany cock beading nailed to the top, sides, and bottom. The veneers on the top drawer are more elaborate, with a panel surrounded by veneer framing with mitered corners. Each drawer has two brass knobs, with stamped brass medallions, and a keyhole at the center near the top. The drawer sides are made of mahogany and come to the full height of the drawer, with a flat top edge. On the interiors of the drawers, quarter round moldings are applied to fill the corners where the sides and bottom of the drawers meet. The drawer backs are pine with a flat top edge. The back of the second drawer is full height, while the others are slightly shorter. The drawer sides are attached to the drawer backs with dovetails, and to the drawer fronts with half blind dovetails.    The bottoms of the second and third drawers are single boards running side to side, with chamfering at the front and sides. The bottom of the top drawer has a narrow additional board forming the rear portion of the bottom, which is glued to the main bottom board. This is likely to increase the depth of the drawer to create the overhang of the top drawer when in the case. The drawer bottoms are let into grooves at the front and sides, and nailed to the underside of the drawer backs. The bottom of the bottom drawer has been split into two boards, with the grain oriented side to side. These boards are let into grooves in the front and sides of the drawer, as well as being set into a groove in a raised support board running from the front center to the back center of the drawer. Each of the two boards of the bottom is chamfered at the front and both sides. The bottom boards and support board are nailed to the underside of the drawer back. On the interior of the drawer, the support board has been rounded on the corners. This support board was most likely added to help the drawer move more smoothly over the case bottom.    The upper drawer unit of this piece is constructed as a box with an open front. The bottom and back are each a single board of ring porous hardwood, possibly ash. The sides and top are each single pine boards. Mahogany veneers have been applied to the sides and front edges of the unit. Additionally, a mahogany board has been laid over the top pine board. The mahogany top has overhanging rounded edges at the front and sides. The sides of the unit are attached to the bottom and top with half blind dovetails. The back has been nailed on. Large screws attach down through the bottom of the upper unit into the top of the lower case to hold the upper unit in place.    The upper unit has two pine vertical drawer dividers attached with mortise and tenons to the top and bottom, creating three drawer openings of the same size. The dividers have been veneered with mahogany on the front edges and do not reach fully to the back of the unit. Each drawer opening has two mahogany drawer dividers of the same size and style as the one remaining mahogany drawer stop on the lower case; they are rectangular with chamfered sides and back, and the back corners have been cut down. The drawers rest on the bottom of the upper unit with no additional drawer supports.    The small drawers of the upper unit have pine fronts with figured mahogany veneer and two brass knobs. Each drawer has a keyhole at the center near the top. Mahogany cock beading has been nailed to the top, bottom, and sides of the drawer fronts. The drawer sides are mahogany and are attached to the drawer backs with dovetails. The join to the drawer fronts is most likely with half blind dovetails, but is not visible. The drawer sides are full height, with flat top edges. The pine drawer backs are slightly shorter and have flat top edges. The drawer bottoms are also pine, with a single board oriented side to side. It is chamfered and let into a groove at the front and sides of the drawer. The secondary woods are mostly nonporous with visible resin canals and multiple large knots, making white pine a likely species.
