The primary wood is mahogany with secondary wood of white pine or American tulip poplar. The four ogee bracket feet appear to be original; the lower half of each foot has been replaced. The left front foot has been broken and reattached; a small chip has been removed from its center edge. The sides of the desk are attached to the top and bottom with dovetails. The front base molding is joined to the bottom with a giant dovetail. The front edges of the sides of the desk have applied strips covering the dovetailed joint to the dividers.    The large graduated drawers have bottoms that are rabbeted and nailed into the drawer front and sides with both old and modern nails. The drawer bottoms are made from single planks of wood with grain running front to back; the bottom of the third drawer displays a plank-sawn sawyers mark. The sides are narrower than the fronts and ride upon replaced runners attached to the desk sides. The drawer sides have been built up at a later date. The drawer fronts are solid and connected to the sides with half-blind dovetails. Replacement vertical stop blocks are screwed to the case side between the runners. The top edges of the drawer sides show single beading. The finished front edges of the dividers between the lower drawers are applied beaded mahogany strips backed up by lighter secondary wood. The brasses and locks (bottom drawer lock is missing) appear to be original.    The interior concave carved prospect door is topped with a shell carving and is attached with a simple latch and pin mechanism rather than a hinge. The pigeon hole dividers and partitions are straight with serpentine valances above the pigeon holes. The valance above the central pigeon hole is also a drawer. The colonettes on either side of the prospect are attached to tall narrow fitted drawers. Two rows of plain fronted fitted drawers are located beneath the pigeon holes.    The bookcase was married to the desk and is not a Boston-made piece. It features a pediment with scrolls that terminate in rosettes. The scrolls are backed with triangular supports. A carved phoenix is applied to the center of the pediment.
