The commode?ÇÖs front, sides, and back are each constructed of one board, joined to the legs with pinned mortise and tenon joints. The top edges of the front, sides, and back are flush with the tops of the legs. The bottom edges are cut with a central semicircular drop and cyma curves at either side. The lid is constructed of one large board, the grain ends of which are capped by perpendicularly-oriented narrow boards. The front and side edges of the lid are decorated with integral ogee molding. Original iron hinges attach the lid to the back board. The four legs are identical, with squared upper sections and baluster- and ring-turned lower sections. A cube of wood has been cut from the top of each leg, leaving the exterior surface of the leg intact and creating a small square ledge on the interior of the commode. Four shelf supports are nailed to the interior of the front, side, and back boards with the upper surfaces of each support level with the square ledges formed from the legs. A removable square board with a central circular cut-out, intended to house a chamber pot, rests on the shelf supports and ledges.
