Veneered and inlay decoration throughout the surface.    Upper case: The upper case top is constructed of five boards that are attached with nails. A bead and cove molding has been nailed to the front and sides of the case top. Following the initial molding, the top has a broken, arched pediment. The pediment has a small quarter round molding followed by a large cove molding. There are three gilded flame finials on the case top. The case sides are constructed of two boards with squared edges. At the front edges are squared, flat, applied, fluted columns, which extend to the top molding. The case back is constructed of four horizontal boards that are connected with lap joints. The boards are attached with several generations of nails. The top board of the case back is cut into the shape of the pediment. The case bottom is constructed of two boards that are attached with dovetails. The upper case has seven drawers with a bead molding applied to the outline of the drawer openings. The top edges of the topmost drawers are outlined in a light and dark wood stringing. A six-pointed star is inlaid in light and dark wood below the pediment on either side of the top, central drawer. The top row of drawers consists of a large, central, square drawer with a thick, carved shell that has been decorated with gesso and gilding. This drawer is flanked by two smaller drawers. Below this row are four graduated drawers. The drawer fronts are covered in a vertical veneer. The drawers have applied running strips and the drawer sides are not full height. The bottom of the lowest drawer is constructed of two boards that are nailed to the back of the drawer. The tops and backs of the drawers have a double bead molding. The majority of the drawers have drawer stops attached to the back. The top row of dust boards are angled downward in the back with side runners that extend the length of the interior. The remaining drawers rest on dust boards.    Lower case: The lower case top is constructed of four boards, which are chamfered to let into a rabbet on the front and nailed in the back. The molding on the top is a quarter-round followed by a cove molding that is nailed to the front and sides. The molding is flush to the sides and, in the front at each corner, there is a squared section that is projected outward for 4.5 in. (11.43 cm). The case sides are constructed of one board with squared edges. The case back is constructed of one horizontal board that is attached with pinned mortise and tenon joints. There is a metal backing on the side of the back, above the left leg. A skirt on the bottom of the case front is shaped with three sections of diagonal rising cyma curves that meet at a straight line with the two drops flanking the center. At the point of the drops, there is an extra piece of wood meant to resemble beading with a small acorn drop at the bottom. The acorn drops are secured, but the opening does not match the current finial. On the sides, there are two cyma curves rising at an angle to a squared, flat line. A central square outlines in light and dark stringing a central veneer panel with a six-pointed star inlay pattern in light and dark wood. The lower case has five drawers with an applied bead molding outlining each of the drawer openings. The drawers are arranged with two, thin drawers placed side-by-side on the top with three, squared, deep drawers below. The drawer fronts are covered in a vertical veneer. The drawer sides are not full height and are dovetailed to both the front and back. The tops of the drawer sides and back have a double bead molding. The fronts of the drawers have an outline of stringing with banding on the outsides and a central panel of veneer. The central drawer on the bottom has a large, thick, carved shell on the front that is decorated with gesso and gilding. Four cabriole legs are attached with pinned mortise and tenon joints, and reinforced with glue in some places. Scrolls are carved into both sides of each of the legs. Each leg terminates with a pad foot, which has a thick bottom and turned decoration that makes it appear sectioned.    Condition: There is insect damage on the inside of the case sides of the lower case. The gilded shell on the lower case drawer has loss of gilding in areas. The acorn drops are likely replacements. The upper case top has several splits that have been patched with glue as well as brown tape. There are missing locks on some of the upper case drawers. The finials appear to be gold-painted, plaster replacements and the original chimneys are no longer attached (stored in the drawers). There are marks that note the original location of earlier chimneys and finials.
