The crest rail of the chair back is continuous with the arms, which slope downward in ogee curves and terminate in carved griffin heads. The top surface of the crest and arms is upholstered. The open seat back is filled with a wide, flat splat that is cut into the monogram [GW] interwoven with foliate designs. The upper right portion of the splat is missing. Double cyma-curved arm supports are carved on the front-facing surfaces with incised lines that resemble scales. The bottoms of the arm supports terminate in scrolls. The compass seat is framed with mortise and tenon joinery and reinforced with nails. The seat retains its original leather upholstery and interior stuffing; the springs have broken through the underside of the seat. The chair has two thick baluster front legs and rear stump legs.
