A board hinged to the unfolding top opens to give access to the keyboard of 68 keys and the keywell, which has two squares of decorative fretting flanking a brass nameplate inscribed: [MADE BY / A. Babcock / for G.D. Mackay, / BOSTON]. The case, including the keywell, features veneered tablets framed in inlay. The top opens fully to reveal the hammers and strings. Below the keyboard, incorporated in the bottom rail, are three drawers: two on the outside with a chased fire gilded brasses pull each and a central, concave drawer with two matching brasses. The bottom rail is trimmed with rosewood crossband molding and gilded chased brass borders. The case sits on six legs that are have chased fire gilded brass capitals and are bulb-and-ring-turned with reeded shafts and tapered terminals on castors.
