(54.9 cm)"},{"label":"Description","value":"Mahogany and figured mahogany veneer late-Chippendale-style desk and bookcase with white pine as a secondary wood.  Upper case: The upper case top is composed of two boards edged with a wide beveled molding that extends inward to meet a bead molding that tightly surrounds the front and sides of the case. Below, a plain veneered frieze culminates in a smaller bead molding. The case sides are composed of single boards with squared edges, which may be veneered pine. The upper case front is primarily composed of two large doors. The doors are attached to the case sides with three brass butt hinges.  Three height-adjustable shelves are fitted to the interior, supported by grooves that appear to be carved into the case sides. Beveled strips are screwed below each shelf. The front edge of each shelf is inscribed with two incised lines. The doors are panel framed with solid mahogany surrounding a single recessed glass panel with half-round mullions glued in a diamond pattern to the glass front. Many of these mullion sections are beginning to pop off of the glass face or have been lost. A double bead astragal molding is attached to the right hand door. The right door also has a lock, and both doors have keyhole surrounds. The case back is panel framed pine with a red mahoganizing wash. The attachment method is unclear. The bottom board of the upper case terminates in a cove molding at the front and sides.  Lower case: The lower case sides and top are made of veneered pine. The sides appear to be recess panel-framed while the interior faces are smooth. The lower case has a secretary drawer with bail pulls that could not be opened. The drawer front is surrounded by cock-beading. It has a recessed central panel faced with horizontal mahogany veneer that is also surrounded by a double bead molding. Below are two panel framed doors with recessed boards faced with vertical crotch grain veneer. The tops and bottoms of the doors are surrounded with cock-beading on the case front. The lower doors are attached to the case with two butt hinges, and the right door has a double bead astragal molding, lock, and keyhole surround. The lower interior is split into two sections with one central divider secured by a long rounded glue block at the top right. The right side is open, and the left side has three interior drawers. The short drawer fronts are faced with horizontal veneers. The drawer sides are full height but cyma curved at the front corners. The drawers are constructed with dovetails. Each drawer has a single bottom board with grain running from side to side and chamfering at the front and sides where the board is let into grooves. The bottom board is nailed to the underside of the drawer back. The drawers rest on runners. The bottom drawer has a recessed section below the runners, which provides a window to the case bottom. The top front board and dividers are attached to the central vertical divider and case sides with nails. The front edges of all the interior dividers are veneered with banded mahogany. The back of the lower case is panel-framed in two panels. It is made of pine boards with a red mahoganizing stain. The case bottom has a plain veneered frieze flanked by bead moldings. It is attached with nails and reinforced by glue blocks.
