(43.8 cm)"},{"label":"Description","value":"Empire style mahogany and figured mahogany veneer work table with white pine secondary wood. The top of the work table is rectangular with curved corners with overhanging edges on all sides. There is an integral double bead molding at the top edge and bottom edge of the table top. There is a fixed, nearly square top board attached to side and back boards with screws in pockets. There is one hinged leaf to either side of the fixed board. Attached with two surface hinges on either side. Edges joined to fixed board are cut with scotia molding to match quarter-round edge of fixed board. Each leaf is supported by one hinged brace with ogee-cut bottom edge and hand-hold. Each brace is joined with a knuckle joint to a board set into the top of each side. When the leaves are down, the braces are flush with the exterior of the edges of the case. The brace for the left leaf opens from front side; the brace for the right leaf opens from the back side.  Case construction: solid pieces of mahogany run from underside of top to bottom at all four corners. Applied circular drops on bottoms. Drops on undersides of corners are turned with quarter round and scotia moldings terminating with a cup shape. The top of the fixed board and top and bottom of the leaves are veneered with figured mahogany. Cracks and minor losses to veneer on the center back of the fixed top and minor loss on the fixed board and right leaf where they meet at the rear. Sides have inner and outer layers. Inner layer is pine which is blind dovetailed into mahogany at corners. Flush with interior-facing edges of mahogany. Outer layer consists of four pieces of wood: single mahogany board runs front to back, flush with bottom of case and slightly inset from vertical edges of corner blocks. Possibly mortise and tenoned into corner blocks; definitely glued to inner layer. Narrow piece of wood with vertical grain between corner block and fixed board of brace. Fixed board with horizontal grain that terminates in knuckle joint. Swing brace on knuckle hinge. There is a veneered front rail just under the top, but cannot see how it joins to top or sides. Veneered bottom front rail is dovetailed into sides and reinforced with nails through the tails. Cannot determine if it is joined to mahogany corner blocks. Front faces of front corner blocks are veneered. Thick veneer outline along all four edges, creating surface relief. Back faces of back blocks have same treatment. Case back may be tenoned into corner blocks. Outer surface veneered. Thick veneer applied in three horizontal strips, mimicking rails and drawer divider on front. Lots of veneer along center strip. Case bottom does not extend to the case back; there is a gap the same width of the front bottom rail. Both the inner and outer layers of the bottom are dovetailed into the case side. There are screws through the rails for reinforcement. The underside is shaped with very slight tapering surfaces that extend from the edges to the pedestal.  The pedestal is rectangular with squared edges and it slightly tapers from the bottom to the top. There is a large metal bolt with a square top that runs through the case bottom, pedestal, and pedestal case. The threaded bolt and square not is visible on the underside of the pedestal base. There is a thick band of veneer one third of the way down the pedestal. There is a band of molding where the pedestal meets the base. The attachment of the pedestal to the rectangular pedestal base is covered by veneer.  There are four serpentine, squared legs with a slight taper and curved tops. The legs are attached with a sliding dovetail, reinforced with metal brackets screwed in place with possibly original screws. The top surface of the legs is carved with pointed, abstracted leaf created with cove and bead moldings; it extends from the curved top down half of the surface. The lower half of the outer surface is carved with reeding set into the plane of the surface with squared edges. The sides of the legs have carved scrolls at the top. The four castors have brass hairy paw mounts and are screwed into the undersides of legs."},{"label":"Date Digitized","value":"7/26/2018"},{"label":"Marks, Signatures, and Inscriptions","value":"Ink
