(68.6 cm)"},{"label":"Description","value":"This counting-house desk is composed of two separately constructed cases, a slant top desk mounted on a set of drawers with high legs. The upper slant top portion of the desk contains interior drawers and storage compartments. The case interior is symmetrically arranged with a center prospect unit composed of a recessed fan decorated drawer over a slightly smaller drawer. Flanking either side of these two vertically stacked drawers are document drawers featuring turned columns. To the left and right of the prospect unit are three pigeonholes over two side by side drawers. The dividers for the pigeonholes have a shaped s-curve edge. On each side, the outer drawer is the width of the two pigeonholes above it and the inner drawer is the width of the single pigeonhole above it. Below this set of drawers is an additional long drawer equal in length to the one above it, but it extends slightly further forward. Between the two bottom long drawers is an open shelf. The vertical and horizontal dividers have a decorative double bead. The lower case is composed of a shallow full length top drawer over a column of two graduated drawers on the left, one deep drawer on the right, and a recessed door in between. The desk sits on six legs, two at the back and four at the front on either side of the column drawers.  Upper case construction: The case top is composed of two boards, the back top board is solid but the front board may be veneered. It is unclear how the case top is attached. An additional board is attached to the underneath of the top and extends across the length of the desk but not the whole depth. The purpose of this third board is unclear. The sides of the top and the front edge have an applied facing. There is a slight bead to the side edges of the case top.  The left case side is composed of two boards. The right case side is composed of one. Both are orientated front to back with squared front edges. The case sides are joined to the case front by half blind dovetails with a mitered corner at the top to hide the top of the dovetail. The case front is one solid board with facing on the top edge and veneered on the front. The top edge is slightly slanted to accommodate for the slanted lid. The case back is composed of two or three horizontal boards joined by a butt joint. It is unclear how the case back is attached. The case bottom is constructed of two boards and is integral to the case. There is a large patch in the front left side. It is unclear how the bottom is attached because the underside was not visible. The upper case has a escutcheon and lock at the center of the case front. There are large bail pulls on both case sides. Surface hinges are applied to the front edge of the case top and the top edge of the slant lid. There is one large slant top lid across the full length of the desk. The lid is made of one horizontal board with a split across its surface. The lid is paneled with two vertical boards attached at the sides. The bottom edge of the lid has an applied facing with a bead along the top and bottom of its edges. The bottom edge of the lid also extends outward forming a lip for the writing surface.  The drawers in the case interior have half-blind dovetails at the front and regular dovetails at the back. The drawer bottoms are let into a rabbet at the front and sides and then most are nailed at the underside at the back. The drawer sides are full height and have beaded sides but a flat back edge. The sides of the drawers extended a bit to serve as a drawer stop. The upper long left and right drawers differ in that the top edge of the drawer backs have a slight curve. The document drawers differ in that the top edges of the sides are curved, the sides are let into a rabbet at the front then nailed through the sides to attach the drawer back and bottom, the top edge of the front has a slightly carve out section to make removing the drawer easier. The interior drawers have brass knob pulls at their centers, except for the document drawers.  It is unclear how the dividers and dust boards are attached to the case.  Lower case construction: The case top is composed of one board attached via blue blocks to a frame. Cove-shaped moldings on the font and sides extends above the case top to hold upper case in place. The left case side is composed of two boards and the right side three. It is unclear how the sides are attached, but likely mortise and tenon. The front and rear stiles are continuous with the legs which are molded with a vertical cove flanked by vertical half rounds for their full length. There is a facing on the underside of the side boards. The case back is composed of at least one horizontal board and attached via mortise and tenon. There are four front legs and two back legs. The front legs are square and chamfered on the corners where two non-molded edges meet. The back legs are chamfered on the inward pointing corner. The corner legs are integral to the case whereas the inner two legs are mortise and tenoned to the top drawer divider. The upper long drawer has an escutcheon, lock and two bail pulls. The column of drawers have two bail pulls and the middle recessed cubby also has a lock and escutcheon.  Top wide drawer and the left drawers have half-blind dovetails at the front and regular dovetails at the back. The bottoms are let into grooves at the front and sides and then nailed to the underside of the back. The drawer bottoms are constructed from one board chamfered at the front and sides. The bottom of the top wide drawer runs sided to side where as the stacked left drawer bottoms run front to back. The drawer sides are full height with beaded edges and a chamfer only on the back edge of the top wide drawer. The drawer fronts are solid with a facing on the top edge.  The large right drawer has half-blind dovetails at the front and regular dovetails at the back. The bottom is let into grooves at the front and sides and then nailed to the underside of the back. The bottom is made of two boards running front to back with chamfering at the front and left side. The right side of the bottom has a narrow separate strip of applied wood that maybe a repair or could be original. The underside is not flush and does not have chamfering. The drawer sides are full height and flat, though the back top edge is slightly rounded. The drawer front is solid with integral bead molding. The front was constructed as two separate drawer fronts separated by horizontal molding across the center. The lower piece has a cutout for a lock that was not installed. It is possible that the drawer was originally intended to be two drawers. The inside of the drawer has shadowing from compartments that are no longer present. The sides, front, and back each have grooves for dividers to be inserted from underneath. The grooves are about half the height of the drawer. There is shadowing for side to side compartment and a front compartment but this front compartment shadowing does not align with the grooves.  All of the drawers rest on runners in the case. Some runners have been replaced. Only the top drawer has drawer stops at the back of the case. Wobble boards are inserted between drawer runners to fill in the space between the runners and case. They are nailed into place.  The middle cubby between the two sets of drawer columns is set back from the case front by 6 inches. The door is one piece of solid wood. The cubby sides seem to be composed of two boards each with veneer applied to the inside portion of the cubby. The door is set between vertical strips applied over the veneer. The bottom of the cubby is also two pieces with the division not quite lined up with the edge of the veneer. Over all the cubby is set within its own frame because of the empty spaces between the drawer sides and the cubby sides that is created by the middle two front legs. Meaning that the drawer runners for the column drawers are applied to the wobble board which acts as filler, then the cubby sides are attached to the wobble.
