Crowning the hood is an arched and molded pediment with ball-and-spire finials at the front corners and center mounted to plinths. Between the finials is a gallery of pierced fretwork. Two reeded, freestanding columns with brass mounts flank the glass door. Framing the door is dotted inlay and veneer and on the left side is a diamond-shaped escutcheon with a keyhole. Opening the door reveals a clockface dial with Roman and Arabic numerals. Pierced hour and minute hands designate time, along with a seconds dial. Winding holes flank a calendar aperture above the inscription: [Zacheus Gates / CHARLESTOWN]. The spandrels are decorated with a sunburst theme. In the lunette is a hemisphere and a moon phase.  Cavetto molding is atop the trunk. Flanking much of the trunk are quarter-round, reeded columns with brass capitals. Around the trunk door is molding, veneer, and dotted inlay. The door is hinged and has a diamond-shaped escutcheon with a keyhole.  Cavetto molding trims the bottom of the trunk at the top of the base. The base is framed in dotted inlay. The clock sits on French feet.  Inscribed in chalk on the inside of the backboard may be a cabinetmaker's reference number: [No. 133]. Several dates are written in chalk on the inside of the case and probably refer to maintenance and repair dates. The bell is inscribed: [G.
