Crowning the drum head is an egg-shaped finial. The circular head has a hinged glass door and a brass bezel, which opens by a latch. The dial has Roman numerals and hands with arrow tips and a winding hole. Inscribed on the dial is: [Warranted by / William Cummens].    The throat has a trapezoidal reverse-painted glass panel set in a veneered frame. The panel is painted with a classical-inspired foliate design. Brass sidearms flank the throat.    The pendulum box has a rectangular reverse-painted glass panel set in a veneered frame. The panel is painted with a scene of a classical female figure riding a chariot with a cherub holding the reins of a steed. Below the figured is the inscription: [COMMERCE]. The scene is contained within a border with plumes and corners that resemble a fleur-de-lis superimposed with the hilt of a sword or tool.    According to an advertisement from Bernard & S.
