Upper case:  The top of the tambour section of the desk is composed of one board, which is rabbeted to the sides. The cove molding along the front and sides of the top is nailed into place. The left and right sides of the case are composed of one board each, and veneered on the exterior. The back of the case is composed of one board, which has split. The back board is nailed in place. The case bottom is composed of one board and attached using glue blocks. Large through dovetails attach the bottom to the sides of the case. The vertical front edges of the case have reeded pilasters.    Two tambour doors flank the central prospect unit. Canvas on the backs of the tambour doors is painted red. The tambour doors open to reveal two drawers above two pigeonholes on either side of the central prospect unit. There are cyma-curved valences at the tops of the pigeonholes. The drawers on the inside of the tambour doors have solid fronts. The drawer sides, on which saw marks are visible, are full height. The drawer bottoms are each composed of one board with the grain running front to back and chamfering at the front and sides. Dovetails join the drawer sides to the front, as well as the drawer sides to the back. The drawer bottoms are let into grooves on the fronts and sides, and nailed to the undersides of the backs. The drawer dividers feature mahogany fronts. The drawers rest on the dust boards.    The central prospect door is composed of one board with vertical veneer, string inlay, and banding on the front. The prospect door opens to reveal one large compartment above a single drawer. The prospect drawer front is solid. The sides come to full height. The bottom of the drawer is composed of one board with the graining running front to back, and chamfering at the front and sides. Dovetails join the drawer sides to the front, as well as the drawer sides to the back. The bottom of the drawer is let into a groove in the front and on the sides, and nailed to the underside of the back. The drawer rests on the case bottom. The fall-front desk door opens to reveal a flat writing surface covered in baize. The door is panel framed. The door front has horizontal, figured veneer, banding, and stringing. There is applied ogee molding on the front edge of the door.    Lower case:  The top of the desk is composed of one board. It is secured in place with flat head screws and two support boards that run side to side under the top board. The support boards are dovetailed to the sides of the desk. The left and right sides of the desk are composed of one board each. The desk back is composed of two horizontal boards butt jointed together. The back of the desk is rabbeted and nailed into place. The desk bottom is composed of one board. Additional boards underneath the case bottom run from side to side and are dovetailed to the case sides. The case bottom rests on these boards. The ogee molding running along the front and sides of the desk bottom is nailed into place.    The lower section of the desk has four graduated drawers and two lopers. The drawer fronts have horizontal veneer, applied bead molding, banding, and string inlay. The drawer fronts are each fitted with two oval brass pulls with eagle decoration. The drawers rest on runners, with the bottom drawer resting on the case bottom. The runners are attached using nails and glue.    Construction of lowest drawer: The drawer sides are full height. The drawer has applied running strips. There are scrub plane marks and circular saw marks on the exterior of the back of the drawer. The drawer bottom is composed of one board with the grain running side to side, with chamfering at the front and sides of the drawer. Dovetail construction joins the drawer sides to the back, as well as the drawer sides to the front. The bottom of the drawer is let into a groove in the front and sides, and nailed to the underside of the back. There are pit sawing marks on the drawer bottom. The lock for the lower drawer has been removed.    The desk has four French feet, attached to the case with glue blocks.
