In November 1923 he wrote concerning the table, \"My antique card table was given at least 80 years ago to my father by Waitstill Pierce...His aunt was a widow who was then from 70 to 90 years old. She was only moderately well off and would not have bought such a table after she was of middle [age]. (88.3 cm), Length 36.75 in. (93.3 cm)"},{"label":"Description","value":"Federal gate-leg card table. The surface of the notched, demilune-shaped top appears to have been refinished. The top of the table is secured in place with flathead screws fitted into screw pockets. The vertical edges of the table top are inlaid with two horizontal lines of unidentified light wood stringing with a band of rosewood in between. Knife hinges connect the fixed top and drop leaf together. The frame of the table is fitted together with mortise and tenon construction, glue blocks, and screws, with dovetail joinery on the fixed board at the rear of the frame. The front and sides of the skirt are veneered with rectangles of figured maple bordered with rosewood. Sawtooth banding, composed of alternating triangles of light wood and rosewood, is applied along the bottom edges of the skirt. The skirt front also features a center tablet of oval figured maple set in a rosewood ground and flanked by rectangular tablets. Vertical inlaid lines of light wood with rosewood dots separate the center oval inlay from the rectangular inlay tablets. Some of the sawtooth banding is missing below the oval inlay. Four reeded, turned legs support the table top and are attached to the case with mortise and tenon construction and screws. A knuckle hinge attaches the gate leg to the fixed portion of the frame.
