Weil submitted to DAPC a polaroid of this chair and reported that on the seat rail in ink was the signature of F. Coat. In 1966, Nancy Goyne Evans (former Assistant Registrar at Winterthur) noted that the Coats of well-documented cabinetmaking firm, Vose & Coates, is Joshua F. Coates of Boston, but she did not believe that whoever signed the rail was Joshua. In 1968, DAPC Cataloger JJE added to the note that the first initial of the signature is 'J' rather than 'F,' and therefore the chair could be attributed to Joshua Coates (whose middle initial is F., a detail which could still collaborate the attribution)."},{"label":"Subjects (AAT)","value":["Side chairs"]},{"label":"Subjects","value":["Chairs"]},{"label":"History of Ownership","value":"Owned by dealer Jack H. The ears are double-square and where the lower rail meets the side stiles are matching squares. The stiles and rails are fluted. Where the side stiles meet the seat, they curve sharply inward. Three vertical, carved slats are mounted between the crest rail and the lower rail. The fluted slats split near the crest rail to form arches. The trapezoidal seat is upholstered over the frame. On the rear seat rail is the maker's inscription. The fluted front legs taper at the bottom. The rear legs cant backward. Box stretchers brace the legs. The back stretcher is positioned slightly higher than the height of the other three stretchers. The front stretcher is slightly recessed."},{"label":"Date Digitized","value":"10/9/2018"},{"label":"Marks, Signatures, and Inscriptions","value":"According to Jack H.
